It is cruel of the Fates, to allow them to grow so close, to seat them next to one another, and yet keep them so far apart. Melinoë can see the knob of Icarus's wrist, the rise and fall of his knuckles, the neat line of his fingernails. She can see the way his hands shake, slightly, before he balls them into fists. She can see them, but she can’t touch them–she can’t feel for herself the warmth of his skin, or the smooth line of the scar beside his thumb, or simply soothe him, palm-to-palm. Were she to try, her hand would pass through as though he were merely an illusion.

Carmy is in his fucking element, showing off as he giddily shares samples of newly thought up concoctions. There’s something in how different Carmy seems, the centre of attention, using his food as his love language, captivating the crowd around him. For a second, Richie sees Michael in Carmy’s place. A tear threatens to cut through the laughter, so Richie just laughs harder, bringing up the beer to his lips to wash that little grief back down."
