Colin maintained that his recent bout of lunacy was, in its entirety, all Penelope Featherington’s fault. For, had she not been so very resolute in her refusal to speak to him after an off-season's worth of unanswered letters, it was wholly possible that – after having overheard his mother lamenting both the state of the Featherington baronry and the effects of Lady Featherington’s now rather indiscreet baby race on Penelope’s chances at a felicitous (if practical) match – Colin would have acted far more rationally than to orchestrate a not-so-clandestine, not-so-very-appropriate, and also not-at-all-truthful midnight tryst between them in the orangery at Vauxhall Gardens.
(Maybe.)
After all, if it was simply time Penelope needed to work her way towards forgiving him and restoring their once warm friendship, as his mother had suggested… Well, then a lifetime together would certainly suit that, with change to spare, wouldn’t it?

Summary
After another detour, another hour in traffic, and then another detour, they’re finally rolling through a mostly clear, fairly deserted stretch of road. Then, the GPS on the screen loses signal.
“Fuck,” he mutters. “Can you check your cell?”
Penelope does, but there’s not even a hint of a bar. For good measure, she checks his, but it’s just as signal-less.
“I can’t believe we’re lost,” she says with a giggle. “You’re gonna be hungry soon.”
“You afraid you’re gonna get eaten first?” he asks with a stupidly charming grin. Penelope nudges him with her elbow.
“If we turn back now, we’re going to end up doing this for another five hours,” Colin whines. “And I’m worried I’ll probably get us more lost with how all the detours ended up.”
“There was a sign for an inn not that far back. Do you want to try our luck?” she asks him. He purses his lips.
“Probably a better idea, and at least we can be warm inside. I’m dying to be vertical again,” he agrees.

Now they’re both pretending it never happened and Pen has a boyfriend and Colin may in fact be going mad. Even Eloise is concerned for him.
Penelope is blissfully unaware that there's anything amiss. She's also impervious to hints or flirtations, thoroughly convinced Colin sees her only as a friend. If Colin wants her, he's going to have to lay his heart on the line in a manner so obvious even she can't explain it away.
