Summary
As he tucks the blanket around his legs (and Spike!), he can see through the sheer curtain all the way to the step up onto the little patio. It's a good place to watch the world outside, he understands now why Carla and dad often stand here and watch the people of the street go about their business.
Chris trains his gaze on the space just beyond the front door, and as he watches, he feels his body relax into the soft cushions of the chair and the warmth of the blanket. He can feel his lips tug and twist into a small smile as he watches and waits.
The light is on.

Summary
"Buck," Eddie says, and when Buck looks back at him he finds nothing but love there. "Sure, I'll marry you."
"Oh," Buck says, and his voice is strange and every part of him not anchored to the weight and warmth of Eddie's arm pressed through their suits feels very far away.
Eddie turns more into him, kisses him twice. "Marry me," he laughs, a sound that makes Buck feel more drunk than the champagne. "Buck- please, will you marry me?"
He nods, frantically, and as Eddie laughs again Buck says "Next year, next- in the summer- the- the end of summer, right before school. That's when the best sunsets are."
Oh, his smile, oh, his smile. "It's a date," Eddie says, joy all over him, and Buck curls down into his arms. He can feel Eddie’s nose pressed into the side of his head. "I have to get you a ring," he says, still laughing, a little wet this time. As Buck cries into Eddie's nice suit jacket their family around them laugh, too.

In the fall, Buck begins to disappear.

Summary
“How did you get home from the hospital?”
“Took an uber.”
“Does Maddie know?” Silence. “Does anyone?” More silence. More of Buck refusing to meet his gaze, staring at the door like he thought he could entice Eddie to leave by the power of suggestion. Well, good fucking luck, Eddie thought. Wild horses, and all that. “Why didn’t you call anyone?” he demanded. “Why didn’t you call me?”
“I did!” Buck snarled. The momentum of his indignation carried him into a sitting position, and Eddie could see him flinch with the pain of it. His unnaturally stoic front was gone, and something raw and wrenching took its place; it occurred to Eddie that he’d never heard Buck raise his voice before. “I did call you, Eddie! As I was bleeding out on my kitchen floor. You. Didn’t. Answer.”
---
The squatter in Buck's attic has a knife. Buck has a bit of a breakdown. Eddie has a plan to make everything right.

“I have no idea what’s going on.” He was embarrassed at the whiny note in his voice, but he couldn’t swallow it away. “I mean, the last thing I remember, I was telling my parents that I was leaving Texas. And then all of the sudden I wake up and it’s like—”
Like some stranger named Buck had infiltrated every corner of his life. That’s what it felt like.

Finally Hotch strides onto the plane, all they’d been waiting for before they could take off.
“What about you, Hotch?” asks Emily. “More training for your triathlon this weekend?”
“Unfortunately not,” says Hotch. His mouth is tight, and there’s a furrow to his brow. They all know the signs too well not to know something is wrong. “We have a case.”
“Already?” asks JJ, dismayed.
Hotch nods, shortly. “Fifteen year old boy has been reported missing in Los Angeles. Christopher Diaz.”

Summary
“Oh, I mean, I guess you guys aren’t married yet, but it still counts,” Harry insists, but the more he talks, the more he realizes he’s making some sort of faux pas. He glances around for some help. Maddie and Chimney are clutching each other’s hands tightly, Hen and Karen are looking pointedly at the floor, Buck and Eddie are staring at Harry, and May and Ravi look like they’re on the verge of exploding with laughter. Well, that’s suspicious. “What am I missing here?” Harry finally asks.
“Buck and I aren’t a couple, bud,” Eddie says gently.

Summary
Eddie realized dimly that his hand was still lifted, phone pressed to his ear, the call still live – Buck’s voice spilling through the speaker, thin and panicked and far too loud:
“…Eddie, what is happening? Talk to me. Eddie.”
He should have kissed him before leaving the house, Eddie thought, as his knees gave out.
He should have kissed him more, period. Every chance he got. In the kitchen, from behind, hands wrapped around his waist. On the couch, during the quiet lull of a movie neither of them was watching. In the parking lot before a shift, just because he could. In the locker room as the bells went off – a good luck charm tucked just out of sight.
He should have stopped acting like there’d always be another time.
Or,
Eddie refuses to talk about his feelings until the universe literally shoots him about it.

Buck isn't squeamish—he's been a first responder for way too long for that. He's familiar with the brutal mechanics of how a human body can fail and bleed and fall apart, how easily people break. How sometimes the things you need to do to keep them breathing aren't pretty.

Summary
A person who listens to whatever inane, mundane shit Buck is incapable of not spouting? Actually listens, with interjected questions and regular mmhms of acknowledgement? Indulgent of every tangent, every spiel, unless Buck is actively sowing terror in the hearts of victims on calls with his worst-case scenario stories.
He has that person. Eddie. According to May, that makes Eddie his person, a thought that has a bloom of warmth unfurling in his chest.
It might not be romantic, but it’s—it’s something.
And it’s worth Buck trying to get back to who they were. When their shift is over, he follows Eddie home like he might’ve done a year ago.
