Summary
Paul turns back, and his face is oddly drawn, pulled inwards like he’s fighting a sudden stomachache. “You and John didn’t— did you?”
“No,” is what George says. “But I thought about it, sometimes.”
Paul sags at the shoulders, a relief of sorts that’s not yet enough to stop him from digging. “I didn’t know you were interested.”

Summary
Louis de Pointe du Lac, young guy, thirties. Dressed neat and clean. Uses words like “befitting”. Makes a drug deal like he’s flogging an art piece.
Men don’t usually register on Daniel’s radar for their looks. The underfed blondie tweaked out on meth and the hairy biker with two inches of gut hanging over his belt all seem about the same when he’s on his knees in a bathroom stall with his eyes closed.
But this Louis de Pointe du Lac has a thing about him.

Agitated, Aziraphale keeps walking. “It’s not suffering for suffering’s sake. It’s about goodness in the face of hardship. Coping with extraordinary difficulties while still retaining moral—”
“Purity?”
“—gumption, that is, making the right choices even under duress, or – or, temptation.” Aziraphale smooths his hands down his tunic, dusty yellow in the kick-up of sand on the wind.

(Or: Aziraphale tries to make a point. Crowley, as usual, finds a way to undermine it.)

“It’s not—” Aziraphale hesitates. “There is, after all, precedent. The – the sacredness of, of slaughter. Lambs, and such. And – and the notion of bounty.” He waves a heavy arm. “The symbolism, therein.”
“Oh, sure.” Crowley nods, and his curly beard moves with him. “The symbolism therein.” Along the ground, his leg is bare where his robe falls away.

Summary
Bonnet took a dainty sip of rum, then put the mug down with a fussy finality. “Look, I’m not interested in deals and riches and who gets what from who. I want to find Ed, that’s it. You’ll come with us, and you’ll guide us to the Revenge, and when we’re done, you can have my other ship to do with what you like. Sell it, sail away, set it on fire, I don’t care. Do we have an accord?”
Bonnet held out a hand. His nails were ragged, and there were blisters on his fingers. Somehow, he still smelled of lavender. With all the recalcitrance of reaching towards an open flame, Izzy shook it.
-
(Or: after brokering an uneasy peace, Izzy Hands, Stede Bonnet and the rest of the Revenge’s depleted crew are thrown together for a mission: find Edward, snap him out of his terrible madness, and then – and then.)

Summary
When Edmund Blackadder, bloodied from shrapnel and ears ringing from the shelling, stumbled over Captain Darling's body caught in a tangle of barbed wire, he did not, despite many assurances towards it over the years, laugh, clap, and dance.
Instead, Blackadder took in the dark-wet definitely-not-mud stain spread all over Darling's uniformed chest, the pistol lax in his grip, his unseeing eyes turned up towards the overcast sky, and said, "oh, bloody buggering hell.""Quite," agreed Darling, squinting down at his own corpse; and, despite the unfortunate circumstances, took great pleasure in hearing Blackadder scream like a little girl.

Bookmarker's Notes
a comedy, a ghost story, and a romance all in one.
stylistically, this is so in keeping with the blackaddery flavour of the tv series, the quips and the comedy and the slightly unreal silliness of it all. there's a really good (difficult to achieve!) edmund voice, with all his similes and cynicism, and his constant desire to have the last, cleverest word.
there's also a real seriousness to this, too - that genuine thread of terror and sadness, the unfunny reality of war, the emotional stakes of survival. the story moves so expertly from one thing to another, between shades of light and dark,
there's an excellent cast of characters, new and amusing ones, as well as the classic blackadder crew, all of whom have a role to play in the story, and who really highlight how much edmund, for all his protestations, really needs all these beloved idiots around him.
there are so many wonderful details to enjoy, so many jokes to crack up at, so many big emotional moments to get swept up by. a really enjoyable story.
