It had started off with a couple hate tweets here and there. Nothing unusual, every hockey player had haters, especially ones as prominent and talented as him and Hollander.
Ilya never listened to what people on the Internet said. Why should he care what random people behind a screen thought of him? Especially when they were Scott Hunter fans. Or worse, Pike fans.
He thought it was the same for Shane, who barely ever used social media in the first place, let alone look up his name on them to see what people were saying about him. But Ilya was wrong.

It makes him think of the other night with that nasty motel bedspread pulled right up beneath her chin, asking about locks on the door. It makes him think of a scared kid.
“What difference does it make?” Ellie mumbles out while avoiding his gaze. “I’m out of there now.” She turns a steely gaze towards him. “And I’m not going back.”
“Wasn’t planning on makin’ ya,” Joel whispers in the late night air. The stars are coming out. If it’s a clear enough night, maybe he can point out Mars to her.

It’s not that Ellie means to stalk the couple she catches lurking in the shadows at 1 in the morning after sneaking out of her dorm because sitting in the room alone was making it hard to breathe, but fellow curfew-breakers can hardly expect privacy. All’s fair in love and rule-breaking or whatever their English teacher said in one of the rare classes when they were learning something not related to FEDRA policy.
And there’s something in the way the man holds his hand out to help pull the woman up over a crumbled brick wall that she just can’t look away from.
There’s a gentleness there despite his size and obvious strength that makes her breath catch for just a second. It’s too far for her to hear what they’re saying, but the woman says something with a little half-smile and presses her hand to the man’s shoulder, and the casual affection of the gesture fills her with a nameless want.
So, trailing them at a distance it is.
(AU in which Ellie follows Joel and Tess around and meets them with no Fireflies involved)

“Brains are like bones,” he says when he’s sure he can be calm, and she pulls back at that, face scrunched in judgment.
“Jesus, man, it sounds like you’re the one who needs to take a biology class.”
“Hold the sass,” he chides mildly, and she rolls her eyes but settles against him again. “A broken bone hurts like a bitch,” he says, “and for a while it doesn’t work like it should. Sometimes it feels like it might never hold you up again.”
She’s quiet, but it’s an attentive sort of silence, not like her blessedly increasingly rare moments of catatonia.
“But it heals, baby girl,” he tells her, adjusting her until he can get his arms around her, blanket bundle and all. He rests his chin on the top of her head and brings one hand up to squeeze the back of her neck gently, trying to coax the tense muscles loose. “Sometimes it still aches on rainy days-”
“Okay, Edgar Allen Joel.”
“-but you take those days, and you breathe through them, and eventually, they end.”
(the events of episode 8 have left their scars on Ellie) (luckily she has a Joel)

It wouldn’t be such a problem if she didn’t have such a massive crush on Dina, a crush that sometimes feels like it might be going somewhere when their eyes meet or Dina does stuff like reaching out to fix her ponytail for her, which sends little sparks of electricity throughout her entire body. They even linked pinkies during the last movie night, when Joel had opted out to go play poker with Tommy at the bar so she hadn’t been sitting next to him for once.
She wants to tell him so badly, wants to include him in this part of her life. She knows from other kids that they don’t usually tell their parents who they like, at least not until they’re dating or something, but Joel’s the person she wants to tell everything to. He’s always her first stop after a successful hunt or a good grade on a test or the highest score at archery practice. She wants to tell him about Dina, wants to be able to bring Dina around him. She likes being at home more than she likes most things, and she wants to be able to have Dina over in the place that she likes the most. She wants to pull Dina into game night with them and Tommy and Maria, wants to slowly knit her into their little family.
