Something effervescent bubbles in the hollows of Jing Yuan’s lungs. When it seeps between his teeth it is a laugh. I’m sorry I ever doubted you, he thinks, and then, aching: I think I’ve remembered what it is to fall.

“You haven’t had an interest in killing me in a great number of days,” Dan Heng says, before he can catch the words between his teeth. He’s not sure if it’s an accusation.
