Summary
Jackie survives the first night of winter. Javi doesn’t.
With silence thick in the cabin and pity worse than the cold, Jackie volunteers to join Nat on a hunting trip. She doesn’t expect forgiveness. She doesn’t even expect meat. Just the chance to feel real again.
When a sudden blizzard injures Nat and traps them in a cave together, there’s nowhere left to run—not from the storm, not from the past, and not from each other.

Summary
“What are we doing here, mom?” Thalia asks as she helps Jason out of the car.
“Camping,” the lady says blithely.
They finally make it to a big clearing with lots of stone picnic tables and families eating. There’s a big empty house with no roof and half of its walls missing and Jason wants to go inside. He wanders towards it, but Thalia grabs his hand to pull him to a stop. He pouts up at her and points at the house. “Inside.”
Thalia shakes her head and backs away from it. “No, Jason, we’re not going in there. It’s creepy.”
Jason wants to disagree with her. But Thalia looks scared, and Thalia never looks scared, so he decides to explore the house later.
“Thalia.” They both turn to see the lady standing behind them, holding out her ring of keys. “I forgot to get the cooler. Go get it.”
Thalia scoffs and rolls tugs at Jason’s hand. “Come on. We gotta get the food.”
Jason only makes it a couple steps before the lady grabs him under the arms, yanking him away from Thalia. Jason frowns but doesn’t complain.
“You go on by yourself,” the lady says. “You’ll be quicker if you go alone, and I can take care of Jason.”

Summary
When they were all in the car, Thalia finally voiced her question. “Where are we going?”
Her mom flicked her gaze up to the rear view mirror, and Thalia could see a wild glint in her eye. She clutched Jason a little tighter to her chest. “I'm going to see your father.”
“Where are you going to see him?”
“Don't worry about it. Now, make sure you keep Jason quiet. I've got a headache.”
Thalia bit her tongue and looked out the window.
When they finally stopped, Thalia was startled to see a mostly abandoned parking lot next to a rocky beach. She frowned. “What are we doing here?”
“I already told you that,” her mom dismissed. “Now, get over here and help me carry this.”
“But dad said we weren't supposed to go in the ocean,” Thalia reminded her, struggling to get out of the car with Jason in her arms.
Her mom rolled her eyes. “Yes, well, your mother said that you are. Come on.”
