He pauses and slides his eyes away from where he’s been staring at all the pink in muted horror, meeting her gaze once more before his voice drops an octave and he whispers, “I realized you thought we were laughing at you that first night.”
Elphaba feels herself tense up, her arms sliding around her chest to hold herself tightly as she regards Fiyero carefully.
“You were,” she says, frowning as she remembers that night, the way he’d stood toe to toe with her through her usual diatribe and then had glanced back at his Horse and started giggling.
“No, we really weren’t,” Fiyero argues.
OR
Fiyero goes to Elphaba and asks for a second chance. She gives it to him.

Fiyero closed his eyes.
“Fae,” he whispered, voice trembling with awe, “it would be the greatest honor of my life.”

Twelve years ago, the Vinkus rose up and defied the Wizard’s rule. Their rebellion was put down swiftly and violently to serve as an example for the rest of Oz. In the chaos, the king and queen were killed, and their young son vanished, though everyone with a lick of sense presumed he had died as well.
Now, Elphaba Thropp has just defied the Wizard herself, and she’s turned her broom westward, hoping to find the sparks of a new revolution where the last one failed.
