Summary
Trey Clover was a study in controlled contradictions. He projected an image of steadfast normalcy, yet possessed a sharp, observant mind and, apparently, a history with rogue sourdough. He adhered to rules yet seemed quietly accepting of nature's (and perhaps Jade's) inherent unpredictability.
It made him difficult to read, difficult to predict fully. And Jade found that... intriguing.
His train of thought was cut short by the tickling sensation that resurfaced deep in his throat. Another dry, persistent itch, almost like breathing in fine dust. He cleared his throat quietly, then again, trying to dislodge the irritation. It remained, a low-level annoyance distracting him from the intricate lines before him. Jade reached for his water bottle, taking a slow sip. The coolness soothed his throat momentarily, but the itch returned almost immediately.
Strange. He rarely experienced such things.

It was a perfectly rendered mask of normalcy, and Jade hated it with a silent, burning intensity. Trey Clover, with his open smiles and practical pleasantries, felt like a box that had been left wide open, its contents already surveyed and found wanting.
He found Trey Clover boring.

Trey thought, not for the first time, what a beautiful, strange creature Jade Leech was. The paradoxes of him were a constant, quiet fascination. Trey’s palm rested on the cool, smooth plane of Jade’s back, a coolness that clung to him like a memory of the deep ocean. His fingers were loosely tangled in the silken, teal strands of Jade’s hair as he inhaled the scent that was uniquely his: the sharp bite of brine and the damp perfume of a forest floor, a wildness that had woven itself into the domestic scents of sugar and bread that clung to Trey. It was a scent that shouldn’t have made sense, but on Jade, it felt like coming home.
He was waiting for it. And then, it came—a voice, smooth as a stone worn by ages of tide, cutting through the stillness.
“Trey-san.”
Trey allowed a beat to pass before stirring, playing along with the pretense of being woken. “Mmm, yes, Jade?” he mumbled, pitching his voice thick with a sleep he wasn’t truly feeling.
“Would you still love me if I were a Death Cap mushroom?”

“Is that a challenge, Floyd?” Jade’s voice was a silken purr, smooth and dangerous.
Floyd’s grin widened, his own sharp teeth prominently displayed. He leaned back, hooking his thumbs into the pockets of his trousers with a swagger. “Ya bet it is, Jade.”
“Then you are most decidedly on, dearest brother.” Jade replied, his smile a perfect, chilling mirror of Floyd’s.
An invisible current seemed to thrum between the twins. Their mismatched eyes locked, glittering with competitive fire.
Azul sighed.
“What have I started…?”

Selfish. He was so selfish. To think he could ever indulge in something like this, someone like Trey, a human, when his lips were so stained with blood, his mouth so dreadfully contaminated.
There was so much he hadn’t told Trey, so much he’d kept to himself. And despite how often Jade used such a tactic, deception was not something he wished to use on Trey; the human didn’t deserve a partner who only knew how to lie, after all, even if he wanted Jade the same way Jade wanted him.
A part of him wished Trey would understand. Trey, who had been the only one to stay and listen to Jade’s rants, Trey, who still treated him like any other person, despite all the rumors around him—that same Trey, perhaps, would continue to stay if Jade told him now, would continue to kiss Jade until all the worries of his mind disappeared.
But Trey was still human, and their relationship was merely surface-level.

“This cake was dangerously delectable. A man could grow far too used to eating something like this daily.”
Trey chuckled. “It’s just cake, Jade.”
“Perhaps it is just a cake to you, Trey-san,” Jade responded, voice velvet-soft. “But for someone else…it might be the start of something far more addictive.”
“It might be the start of what, sugar addiction?” Trey raised an eyebrow jokingly, while Jade’s expression remained the same.
He just smiled faintly, slowly turning his attention back to the cake slices he received. Trey felt an unusual sensation dwelling in his chest as he watched Jade take another bite from the dessert. There was something about his expression while enjoying Trey's creations which differed from that of others – his gaze softened as if each bite held something precious.
It started with a slice of raspberry cake, until the sweetness shifted from sugar to something softer, quieter, and harder to name.
