Laurence woke with a start, and for a long moment did not recognize his surroundings. The cabin was filled with light, but it was not his, and his berth was startlingly unmoving; no hammock at all.
He sat up, and met Napoleon’s eyes. The emperor was sat again at the table, over papers and maps, and some unrepentant air about him declared as well as if he’d said so that he had been watching Laurence as he slept.
“Ah, you are awake.” His eyes again roamed Laurence, up and down, with an appreciation that made Laurence’s cheeks heat. “You look much better.”

Granby unexpectedly goes into heat in Australia, unable to source suppressants for himself. Laurence and Tharkay, both alphas, must reckon with their (supposed) unrequited feelings for each other while helping Granby through his heat.
"I want him," he hears himself growling into Laurence's ear. "Do you hear me, Laurence? He's mine." The heat-addled alpha part of his mind is thinking of taking Granby, of sinking into him and claiming him, but deep below, in the part of him that he never allows to become conscious thought, his mind says if I can't have you, Will, I'll have what you want.

This is, most likely, the single fic that’s had the biggest influence on my reading preferences, writing style, you name it. Cannot recommend it enough. If nothing else, this fic is why you should always be willing to read WIPs!
(Seriously, I started reading this fic in 2012, before I even had an AO3 account; I have an update email from chapter 30! This fic got me through half of high school, all of college, and then out into the world. I remember rereading it at least twice, and most recently just as the author was working up to the end of the latest arc in 2021.)
