Summary
Shivering, Nicky draws in tighter on himself. The room they’re being held in is small, but it’s drafty. The vents keep letting in more bursts of air, and they took Nicky on his evening run. He’s wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and the sweat has long-since become cold and clammy against his skin. He has no real concept of how long they’ve been in here, but he knows it’s been at least three hours. That makes it past midnight. There are goosebumps on his knees.
To his left, Joe shifts.
Nicky starts.
“It’s okay,” Joe says, voice hushed. It’s an improvement over the first hour, when he wouldn’t stop calling for help even though there was clearly no one listening. “We’ll be warmer closer together.”

The thing is, he and Bradshaw aren’t friends.
They’ve never been friends.
There was a hazy period, when their paths crossed in flight school and no one had a callsign yet, when they might have been, but Jake had ruined that by being himself–interested in his own advancement and little else. He wasn’t exactly the kind of guy who kept in touch with his classmates after the fact. Coyote’s just lucky they were stationed together.
But Bradshaw…well, the next time they saw each other, their paths had diverged. Their callsigns had been set and their chance at friendship had been gone. Everything that’s come since was something else.
“So what do you say, Seresin?” Payback asks.
Jake blinks. He zoned out, missed the terms of the bet. If he says yes, he’s agreeing to who knows what. If he says no, he’s a coward. “I’m in,” he says.
Or, Jake agrees on a bet to get the most phone numbers in a night.

Don and Kathy would move in together. They would have a dog or two and then inevitably, a small parade of adorable little brats who would call him Uncle Cosmo, and they would spend less and less time with him, not on purpose but busy with the rest of their lives, and ultimately Cosmo would learn to make his peace with it because he’d have no other choice and he would have to try to move on and not live too much in his memories. He could picture it so clearly, he figured if the songwriting gig with Monumental didn’t pan out, he could always return to the backwater circuit with a new act: The Amazing Cosmo of the Cosmos—ladies and gentlemen, he sees the future, he reads the stars, he silently pines for his best married pal and all the while tap dancing!
Don and Kathy inviting him along on their honeymoon, though—that part was a surprise.

“Are we actually doing this?” Fleury asks eagerly, shit-eating grin on his face. He watches as Sid posts a copy of the roster to a board inside the locker room.
Sid sighs. “Dumo and Rusty convinced me we have to,” he says. “For, like, charity. Or something.”
Tanger raises an eyebrow. “How does not… you know. How does that help charity?”
Dumo steps in quickly. “It raises awareness! Prostate cancer kills!”
“Ok, but we’re not telling anyone about this,” Sid rushes to say. “Like, this absolutely has to stay in the locker room, you get that, right?”
Bryan rolls his eyes. “Obviously, Croz.”
“So how does this… whatever. You all want to do this, be my guest,” Sid says.
“No, no, captain must participate too,” Geno pipes in. “How else will team bond?”
“Fine,” Sid says unhappily. “I’ll do it too.”
