“Please don’t go,” she croaked. He froze, and then settled back down beside her, brushing more tears from her cheeks. “Don’t leave me, please—“ his face softened.
“Oh,” he breathed, climbing back into bed beside her and settling her into his lap as he leaned back against the rough bark of their tree-bed. She cried in earnest now, not able to bite back the sobs that came from deep within her, from the absence she had lived with for longer than she had lived with him. She clung to his waist, his shoulders, his neck and he held her to him tightly, gently, as if she were a delicate artifact he couldn’t afford to drop. “I won’t,” he said, voice rough and reverent, as if the words held as much weight as an oath to the gods. “I won’t ever leave you again.” He stroked her hair as he said it over and over again, sincerity deep in his voice like he could not tell a lie if he wanted to. And for her part, the tears would not stop, though her cries quieted the longer he held her to him, now wordless rivers flowing down her face, the physical manifestation of so many years spent waiting.

“Hmm?” Her eyes don’t move from where they rest on the flickering heath. Her deft fingers tie the end of her braided hair quickly. The scent of the oil Odysseus had used after bathing wafts through the air on draughts coming in from the open window. There’s a light chill in the air, but not enough to warrant a thicker robe.
He steps closer, slowly, gingerly, and presses his lips to her forehead. Her temple. Her cheek. Drags his lips down to the curve of her jaw.

As if Shane had a choice in the matter. As if worry hadn’t kept Shane awake past midnight for weeks, as if he wasn’t scared to leave the house for too long in case Ilya did something stupid in his absence. He’d promised he wouldn’t. Several times over. Shane wanted to believe him, he did, but the worse Ilya’s depression got the more hollow the promise felt.
“I always worry about you,” Shane said softly, pushing Ilya’s hair back from his forehead.
