It was years ago when Saotome Ranma fell into the Spring of the Drowned Housewife. Trapped within his own body, married to an Abusive Tendo Akane for years Ranma eventually disassociated to the point where he might as well not even have existed.
Until one day Ranma gets lucky. A spilled cup of tea while bringing home groceries. That on its own wasn't what was lucky. It had happened before and nothing came of it. At this point the influence of the curse and his own disassociation had grown enough that "She" could just make him let her back. What made it lucky was that someone found him. A random stranger who reached out in kindness.
Ranma keeps thinking that it won't last forever. That he'll get hit with some cold water and she'll go back to Akane, but a part of him wants to believe that maybe, he can be free again.

Akane almost drops the kettle she’s setting on the stove. She should have seen it coming, of course, as Kasumi often says these kinds of weird things. That’s why she doesn’t help her in the kitchen as much anymore: Kasumi says something about Ranma, it leaves a sour taste in her mouth, and it never makes any sense.
With the side of her eyes, she observes Kasumi cutting onions and humming.
“What,” Akane stammers, “do you mean?”
After recieving advice from Kasumi, Akane pays more attention to the way Ranma treats her.
