Clark continued, pulling Lex out of the swirling pit of red he'd been sinking back towards, "People don't want to hear it. They don't want to hear about how you got a really good look at Venus last night, they don't want to hear about some new book you read, they don't want to know about the cool thing you learned in class. So you start saving your breath. And then you never know if people would want to hear it, because you don't give them the chance, 'cause you know they'll ignore you. Or they'll pretend they're not, but you know they are, and so you get quiet."
He passed the dish over to Lex, who kept his face down while he dried it and tucked it into the cabinet above the counter.
"But people listened to Superman."

It starts off as a joke. Something stupid and silly to say to Lex when he buys Clark's textbooks or pays for pizza, to make the fact that Clark can't afford it himself a little more bearable. They laugh, Clark feels less guilty for taking Lex's money, and they move on.
The more he does it, the less funny it gets.
Until Clark has another secret to hide from Lex.

Their eyes meet. Superman appraises him silently. Tracks the emaciated planes of his face down to the sharp jut of his collarbones from under the neck of his shirt. Lex doesn’t let himself wish for a door to close, for a curtain to drop, for a blanket to pull over his head. He feels like a child. Terrified and sick about it.
“It’s Wednesday,” Superman says, voice low. Gentle, almost, as if Lex is some sort of stray animal, tense and shaking, primed to bite. Demeaning.
Lex is not shaking. He holds his breath for a moment, wills the rhythm of his lungs to slow. He concentrates the fear into disgust, into a single heated beam of hatred. There are protections in place. Contracts, laws. Lex is government property. Superman won’t — he won’t.
Nobody will touch Lex Luthor.

Lex snatches the phone and glowers at the paused video with a very different, technically familiar man hunched with their nose in their screen behind White in the same place as the newspaper photo. “That is Clark Kent.”
“Yes, sir,” the CO says, annoyingly hesitant, “I-I mean, he looks a little different in this one, sure –”
“A little?” Lex snaps, then taps a knuckle at the paper on the desk. “Are you fucking blind?”
The CO rolls her lips between her teeth.
Lex growls under his breath and minimizes the browser, bringing up the first social media site that comes up on autocomplete. He searches Clark Kent, taps on the ‘Reporter :)’ result and scowls when he sees it gets updated about once a millennium. It is, also, that same face from the press conference, not the one in the paper. He scrolls, and scrolls, and–
Wait. That’s what it is – it’s all videos. He doesn’t see a single still photo in the lot.
