A week after the clone is birthed from his nutrient tank and run through the routine diagnostics, Lex brings him to his office for a markedly less conventional one.
He's been feverishly anticipating this since the beginning, and it'd be foolish to claim otherwise. Finally, the freedom to devote as much time as he wants to cataloguing and committing to memory every inch of his precious creation, reveling in his genius for its own sake rather than rationalizing it as thoroughness or paranoia or some other equally false excuse.
The clone, currently unmasked, intently watches as Lex presses remote buttons to lower the titanium shutters over the windows, triple lock the door, and activate the sound-proofing mechanism in the walls.

Those in power are fooled: Belle Reve offers Anti-Superman expert Lex Luthor a conditional freedom in exchange for his help. Despite LuthorCorp's desperate need for some PR miracle, he's frustratingly picky with interviews—until he requests a specific reporter: The Daily Planet's Clark Kent.
Lex Luthor is doing it for the PR, he says; only came to him because of his badge of Superman's Favorite Reporter, he says. Nothing to do with their past.
Clark Kent tells Lois he's only agreeing so he can keep an eye on Luthor; totally not because, due to some weird i-spent-too-much-time-going-through-dimensional-rifts effect, Lex Luthor now looks too much like his childhood best friend for Clark to stay away.
Of course, they're probably lying.

Lex doesn't stop his movements, but watches him with a calm gaze. "What's that about?"

He is obsessed with exterminating Superman, not only to eradicate the threat to humanity, but to rid himself of the temptation he can't reconcile with himself.
When Lex doesn't mind the risk of wiping out millions of lives as collateral damage during a research test, Superman can't help himself and seeks the confrontation with Lex. And then Superman offers Lex a deal he can't refuse. For twenty-four hours, Superman belongs to him alone. And he will do whatever Lex wants.
