And Stiles knew he was wrong, because he was staring down at a picture of Alyssa Campbell, with her long dark hair, her almond-shaped eyes, her high cheekbones, and that one little beauty mark down by the right side of her lower lip.
He was staring at the same person he’d been dreaming about for days.

Derek exhaled tremulously and tried to stay calm. He called several more times, growing steadily more frantic each time, before allowing the truth to settle in:
Stiles’ phone was off.
“No. No, no, no, please, no,” Derek whispered to himself, barely able to see the screen through his tearful eyes.
What had he done? Had he been so blinded by rage that he dismissed Stiles' call for help?- OR -
Fuming over Scott's betrayal, the Alpha is out of his mind with anger. When he receives a call from Stiles in that incredibly inopportune moment, he does not even let the teen speak - just screams at him, blames him for everything, and hangs up.

Stiles felt like he had been punched in the gut. Two worlds, right? Except, it had never really been two worlds at all. If they lived in two worlds, Stiles wouldn’t feel this unexplainable ache that ran deep in his bones. It had always been one world, with water slipping into the cracks, until there was an ocean between them. Stiles was always caught in the riptides, dragged out to sea where he was left to drown, sinking below the surface as Derek grew further and further out of his reach.

Scott neared the old recliner slowly on edge, “Scott?” he heard a small whimper, “Scotty?” came a half sob.
The young alpha pulled the chair back, revealing a small figure hugging his knees to his chest. The boy had on pajamas, a pair Scott hadn’t seen in years but remembered very well. Who could forget batman themed gray and black pajamas with a glow in the dark bat signal on the chest. They were the coolest and when Scott spent the night Stiles let him wear them every time, like a true best friend.
“Is this a trick?” Allison was first to ask searching the faces of the three males, she was a human beta and didn’t have the wolf sensing abilities.
“It smells like him, like a pup in distress.” Scott kneeled down. “Hey there buddy don’t cry.”
“Where's Scotty? You’re not him, you smell like him.” The young pup sniffed calmed by his best friend’s familiar scent.

“I get the plan, I really do. Lydia is as spot on and pragmatic as usual and this probably is the best possible option,” Stiles took a deep breath and tried really hard not to let any of her sadness seep in through her words which would make the glamour that she had conjured around her useless, “but knowing it and wanting to watch it happen are two different things. I can’t watch you fawn over some other girl, you can’t ask that of me.”
Or: the pack needs alliances and the best option is using Derek as bait so that other packs think that an alliance through marriage is on the horizon. Stiles, sweet overthinking Stiles, has come to her own realization that a real marriage is the best option for the pack’s ensured survival and removing herself from the equation is the only way she thinks she can convince Derek to let that happen.
