Kayne actually goes through with his end of the deal and gives John his own body. However, he not only leaves them stranded in the Dreamlands, but they also gives each of them issues to deal with when it comes to their bodies. Now they have to deal with being separated while they once again try to navigate back to Earth.
Arthur struggles with his feelings toward John, not understanding what they are. (He wouldn't have had the language to define Demi-romantic)
John struggled with... just about everything.~
His thoughts turned to John; it felt incredibly lonely in this room- in this body- without him, even though he was just in the other room. There had once been a point when he'd wished for this; craved being alone more than he could say.
So why did it feel like hell now?
He should be grateful. John had his own body, his own autonomy outside of Arthur now- Arthur had his autonomy back. He should be happy for his friend, happy that he could interact with the world now; that he could interact with him now. And interact he did. He couldn't seem to keep his hands off him.

Summary

On indefinite hiatus!
Okay, so not only is Steve Harrington apparently not a douche, but he’s also kind of a mess?
Now that Eddie is properly looking, he notices the slight bags under Steve’s eyes and how his face is drawn, as if he hasn’t been getting enough sleep. That doesn’t make sense– Eddie would think that Steve is living a cushy life, with his mansion and parents that probably pamper him like a goddamned baby. This Steve doesn’t look pampered at all; instead, Eddie can see a familiar haunted look in his eyes that screams he’s just like you.

If you looked up the definition of "fucked-up" in the dictionary, Steve Harrington's face would be plastered right next to it. After living through two Upside-Down debacles now, it makes sense. Eddie Munson doesn't know about that, but he does notice how similar he and the former King of Hawkins High really are.
