Summary

Summary
The funeral of one of the birds should have more attendants than this, some part of Taako thinks. But Magnus hadn’t wanted that, of course; he’d told Taako as much decades ago, just a few years after the Day of Story and Song. Taako had laughed then, told him he’d regret it when there weren’t any adoring fans weeping and tossing flowers into his grave. Taako isn’t laughing now, here in this clearing with the body that used to be his friend.

Summary
He’s got a reputation to uphold anyways; an uptight, rigid reputation that dictates the way that he interacts and functions and is such an integral part of him that he can’t let go of it anytime soon. He likes his safety nets. He likes his contingencies. He likes his privacy, and everything around this place right down to the walls seems to have ears, so he’ll stay tight-lipped up to and beyond the threat of death.
He’s good at that.

Summary
Elias rolls his eyes, thinking it best not to answer. He instead flicks through his copy of the leaflet, making the conscious decision to read it with his own eyes. The first page is a map of the museum, and the second contains white text laid over a self-portrait of Benjamin, painted sometime between their final meeting and his death in 1857.
“... While his later life saw Earnest’s name become well-known in Victorian society, many of his works, along with his life, from the early 19th century have become something of a mystery- until now,” the leaflet proudly proclaims, “With the help of both his family and the family of Barnabas Bennett - a recurring character in Earnest’s earlier life and many of his paintings - the National Gallery are ecstatic to present these works, alongside long-lost letters and writings, that document the fascinating social circle that the painter became entangled with.” The words make Elias sick to his stomach.

In an art gallery, Elias comes face-to-face with people from his past and is forced to confront his own feelings - both in the past and the present.

The thing is, Jonathan Sims is someone you’d call the police on if you saw him hanging around a school, those frazzled clothes and bags under his eyes, the frantic muttering and thousand-year stare.
Yet there he sits, headteacher of The Magnus Institute for Gifted Young Minds.
The name’s a bit misleading, it is. They’re in a bad part of town. The parents are either terrible or absent, and the kids—
“They’re monsters,” his new and handsome coworker grins, when Martin’s signature on his contract is barely dry. “Absolute monsters. Get too close and you’ll lose some fingers. Or maybe your mind.”
“They’re babies,” is all Martin can feebly manage, in reply, and Tim’s eyes narrow at the fondness in his voice.

Tim peers at him from across the grubby pub table, the low lights casting shadows in the lines of his face, and says, “Do you want to come home with me?”
Martin swallows his swig of beer. He’s not stupid; he knows what Tim is asking. Neither of them is so drunk as to be senseless, and even Martin’s not quite so naive as to misunderstand. It’s a casual offer, Martin knows. Neither turning it down nor accepting will change Tim’s opinion of him or alter their working relationship, from Tim’s point of view at least. And even in the depths of Martin’s desperate, ill-advised pining for his boss of all people, he can’t deny Tim is attractive.

Summary
