The absolute silence of the public library, with an occasional murmur or the click of heels, is repeatedly cut with the loud sounds they can't help making.
Charles has a clear view of all the people entering and exiting the building and the rush at the possibility of someone who can see them finally coming in sends his mind into an intoxicated daze.

Summary
By the time Charles realises he’s taken a wrong turn, it’s too late.
In the pitch darkness, his outstretched hand strikes against something that makes him hiss and draw back almost before he can register the sizzling pain.
“Charles?” Edwin’s concerned voice comes from just behind him, his head knocking clumsily against the soles of Charles’s loafers.“Charles, are you alright?”
Charles is decidedly not alright. That is to say, his iron-stung fingertips are already almost healed, but there is the whole issue of being stuck in a labyrinth of ever-narrowing, cement-lined iron pipes that are impossible for him and his best mate to just phase through.
What was it Crystal would say in a ridiculous situation like this?
“Welp, I didn’t have this on my 2024 bingo card.”
“What do you mean?” There’s a momentary spike of panic before Edwin catches himself and evens his voice. “Charles, whatever does that mean?”

Summary
Edwin knows this is new for Charles. He understands, when Charles wants to take it slow. When they are kissing—because kissing is something they do, now—and Charles pulls back just when Edwin can feel it getting heavy, huffing something about not wanting to rush things.
Edwin can give Charles time to get used to this; as much time as he needs. He can satisfy himself with daydreams and thoughts of Charles in the meantime, as long as it takes for Charles to be ready for more. Forever, if he never is.
But god, Edwin does not want it to be forever.

Edwin doesn’t think about the Blitz, and the way you could hear the bombs falling, even deep underground in the depths of the Athenaeum. He always harboured a particular dislike for the doodlebugs, and the ponderous tick-tick-tick of them as they made their way to their final destination. The way the ticking would stop, and the moment of silence as the bomb fell, before the explosion.
Charles’ mouth drops open on a gasp, the call of the magic possessing Edwin finding its answer. Edwin can feel it rising up through his feet, through his whole body, like a tidal wave.
Just before it closes over his head, he says, “Charles—”
Tick-tick-tick-tick. Boom.

Summary
He actually takes a moment to think about what Edwin said, what he’s being asked for. Edwin wants him to be happy. Wants to know if he isn’t. And not just in the way they already complain to each other. No, Edwin wants to know the big things. The ones Charles himself doesn’t like to think about ever if he can help it.
Edwin, who has spent the last 35 years shying away from any emotion more serious than a chuckle, is asking to be let in. Let in even when he admits it doesn’t make sense to him. Edwin, who, in the literal worst place in the universe, stopped and stayed longer just to give Charles the key to his heart.

Thomas makes eye contact, and smirks in an exaggerated manner that flashes one of his canines. He tops it off with a wink and watches how Charles goes from momentarily deflated right back to petty narrowed eyes and ever constant pacing.
He doesn't stop or bother with eye contact again to say, “so.. what's the plan? Can you dispel it?”
“Well there certainly seems to be a way for the gate to open…” Thomas stalks around to be behind Charles, leaning over him by the shoulders to murmur into his ear suggestively. “If you're willing to swallow your pride and do what needs to be done.”
