Angel presses on. "Do you want to die?"
Of course he wants to die.
He wants to die just as much as he wants to live. Just as he is now devil and human, just as Angel is both beautiful and monstrous. Aki swallows the smoke and it kills him a little, just as it makes life a little more liveable in return. That's how it's been for most of his life.
"That's not what this is about," he says simply, unable to explain it.
Alive, Aki has survived by selling away his heart. Alive, Angel's memories have come back along with guilt. They find solace and understanding in the only person who sees them for what they are.

It wasn’t like he was completely oblivious to Aki’s lingering gazes, his soft smiles when he undoubtedly thought Angel wasn’t looking, or the gloves he’d started wearing. Yet at the same time, he couldn’t believe that they were genuine rather than tricks of light, or something that he was giving meaning to when there was none. Aki, being only human, couldn’t possibly understand the danger that Angel was to him.

Tentatively, Aki followed the leading edge of Angel’s wing, from half-way up the bone protruding from his shoulder, along the curve and downwards, over the large ‘flight’ feathers and back. A slow, smooth motion. If Angel’s hair had been soft, his wings were something else entirely, impossibly light, as if made from the air itself.

What would have happened, if Angel Devil and Aki Hayakawa had been given a bit more time between their first touch and their fateful trip to Hell? Maybe it would have went something like this, with Angel straying closer and closer to Aki's little band of adopted misfits, and the strange relationship between them becoming more difficult - then impossible - to ignore.

Aki nodded, a bit dazed. Neither of their attempts at casualness were totally natural. What to do when your devil buddy showed an odd interest in speedrunning the intimate rituals of human soothing and affection was not part of the training he and Morikawa had been subjected to, nor was what to do when you start feeling that desire in the opposite direction.
But they had emphasized from day one to trust your gut when it came to devils. Said that it was usually right.

"What does it feel like, to be warm?"
Aki inhaled sharply, the cold suddenly forgotten as his body grew hot. He said no words, instead rising to his feet. Angel watched him with that indifferent gaze he'd grown used to, save one thing: his eyes glimmered with emotion.
That warmth pooled in Aki's stomach, burning him from the inside out. He stepped towards the bed, stopping as his knees brushed against the covers. They stared at each other in silence for a moment, Aki's heart hammering in his ears as he considered what he was about to do.
He didn't want to think anymore. He wanted to feel.
He pulled the covers back, and lied beside the devil.
