Philosophers liked to pose the question, observation against perception: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
Aziraphale would argue that sound was something witnessed, and Crowley would argue that if sound had to be witnessed, then why was virtue unwitnessed a nobler thing?
But first, Crowley would point out that he himself had fallen, alone and without witness, and it had bloody fucking hurt.

“Mmhmm,” says Sarah, and when Sam can tear his gaze away from Bucky, he sees that she’s fixing him with a sweetly compassionate gaze. He readies himself for some no-nonsense sisterly wisdom. In tones of deep sympathy, she says, “And you’re horny about it.”
Sam grits his teeth and grips the arms of his lounge chair. “I’m so horny about it, oh my god.”
Bucky is finally ready to make amends with himself, and specifically his body, but he might need to enlist some help. If that help involves kind of, sort of tricking an overworked Sam into doing some self-care and having some fun of his own, so much the better. Sam, meanwhile, is happy to help, it's just that helping Bucky is turning out to have the inconvenient side effect of falling for him too.

“I’m well aware of what it does,” Crowley interrupted. Aziraphale glanced up from the book and took in Crowley’s stance, the apparent lax posture belied by the way he was clutching the edge of the countertop with white knuckles. Aziraphale swallowed.
“Is it…” Aziraphale faltered, then tried again. “Is it…” painful is how he told himself he wanted to finish the question. There was no other possible word to end that question that Aziraphale wanted to know.
“Don’t play dumb, angel. It doesn’t suit you.” Crowley’s voice was low, an edge of something to it that Aziraphale hadn’t heard since the Tadfield airbase, the moment Crowley was ready to give up and accept the apocalypse. He met Aziraphale’s eyes. “You know who I want.”

It wasn’t until late that evening that Aziraphale found the note left for him in the backroom, scrawled in a spiky script that he recognized at once.
Come find me, said the note, and then followed a sigil that burned fire-bright and hot when Aziraphale pressed his thumb to it. It was Crowley’s true name in the original alphabet from which all other alphabets descended. Aziraphale had never seen it before, but he recognized it at once.

When they got back to the bookshop Crowley got out of the car to walk Aziraphale to the door, and they lingered for a moment on the stoop. “Thank you for dinner, my dear,” Aziraphale said quietly, reaching out to take Crowley’s hands again. “I had a lovely time.”
“So did I,” Crowley replied. He didn’t lift his eyes from their hands, but there was a nervous edge to his voice as he said, “Aziraphale?”
“Yes, dear?” Aziraphale whispered.
He could feel Crowley’s hands shaking just slightly in his, but Crowley’s voice was steady when he said, “I love you, you know.”
Aziraphale’s breath caught in his throat, and he was nearly certain his heart skipped a beat. “Thank you,” he blurted, and then closed his eyes in mortification. “Oh, good lord.”
