Rust, well, he always seemed to wear his own functionality, sneered at and rose above the aesthetic. Here he is, smoothing factor 30 into the ridge of that scar.

Summary
Rust — Rust a fool — allows himself to imagine a world in which he turns. A world in which they solve this together, they grind it out and start thinking, really thinking, pavements and hard man-hours, answer to nobody but themselves, they solve it. Marty turns. Let this be that world — it’s the world of shit-all else, it’s the world where Rust wakes up wishing he hadn’t every fucking morning, the world in which he knows the sound a child’s bones, still soft, make under the wheels of an ‘84 Mercedes 230CE — let him have this, just this. Only this.
Marty doesn’t turn. Marty mutters under his breath, “Sanctimonious prick,” and Marty leaves.
They arrest Rust twenty-one days later.

Rust and her dad, Rust-and-her-dad, Macie can’t stop seeing it, the little ways they glance at each other, or don’t glance at each other, know each other well enough not to need to, to be assured innately that the other’s still there.

When she walks in the guy from the truck is sitting at the bar, smoking. Looking at her mom or rather through her mom, not looking at her mom at all. Drunk enough that his chin’s dipping close to his ashtray.

THE LATHE: there are only so many parallel universes that concern us. by palmviolet

Summary
'Sure. You can have these worlds.
You can warm them in your hands at night. But know:
by signing, you agree also to be responsible for the universewhere the oceans glow red, the universe where
what we call shadow is pulsing with the muskof hooves, and especially the one in which
humans exist, but only in the nightmaresof small children. Will you hold that one too?'

To best fire an arrow, first it must be nocked in the correct position on the string. To Bard, this was trained into instinct, and such muscle memory was what guided him in the aftermath of a war.

Summary
The house hates him. The house is the only thing that’s capable of loving him. It won’t ever let him go. Haymitch doesn’t want to. There’s nothing Haymitch wants more than to run and never stop. He doesn’t even want to look over his shoulder. He wants to run, and run, and run—he wants to run like he ran from Gossamer, and Gossamer’s axe, and he wants to run until he collapses, and this time, every action doesn’t have an equal and opposite reaction; and if it does, it’s not an axe flinging itself back through the air.
It’s a boy who decided that he was going to die, and it’s the wet mulch answering him in kind. Haymitch wants to crawl into the rat king that’s hissing at him from the basement and remember that this house has seen the worst of him, and it wants to keep him inside of it forever. Haymitch’s house will die with him.
Haymitch Abernathy, and the house, and the relationships that haunt the house in four acts.

Summary
They take their respective meds, and they make dinners, and they fuck like old men, because they are. Nights, they sit out on the back porch they built together and they listen to crickets sing in the creeping darkness as the sun goes down. It’s not like they have anything better to do, not really; neither of them like to travel too far and neither of them want to move to fuckin’ Florida or something so they live a quiet, contained little life and Marty continually feels a little surprised how happy it makes him.
Or: Rust and Marty and life after almost-death.
