He’s not sure when he started sprinting. When he makes it back to the car, he’s out of breath. He unlocks it, letting his friends in, who are abandoning their bikes. He jams the key into the ignition and turns it, hearing the engine hum, then puts his hands on the wheel. He grips it hard, feeling tears start to fill his eyes. He’s not sure what to do, where to go, his vision is blurry, and he can’t take a full breath. He looks straight through the windshield, at the school, and watches people file in as the bell rings. He feels a tear break through and fall down his cheek.
“Mike,” Will says gingerly, “let me drive.”
Or- After coming back from California, Mike and Will have spent the last year spending as much time together as they can, rebuilding their friendship. They've been secretly hiding their feelings for each other for years, and it's becoming more and more difficult to hold back. After Will saves Mike from the demogorgon at the MAC-Z, Mike finally lets himself acknowledge a truth he's been running from for years:
