Summary

The bride, daughter of the chief though she was, had no dowry but a small trousseau of necessities stored in a single chest, all of them stolen from the Iwagakure’s victims. Her face was a mask of calm deference, but when she passed Gabimaru the ceremonial sake, he noticed tiny ripples in the liquid. Her hands were trembling.
The poor girl was frightened out of her mind.

Phainon stops entirely. His eyes widen. Mydei’s hands twitch at his sides. He holds Phainon’s gaze, jaw clenched and body wound like a spring, watching Phainon swallow—Adam’s apple bobbing.
“What?” he breathes, the word cracking at the end.
Mydei takes a deep breath.
“I love you,” he repeats. “I offer my body and soul to you—my equal in every way, the one worthy to stand beside me. Across thirty-three million cycles, my affections for you have never changed. If our old promises during every one of those cycles still continue to mean something to you as well, then I intend to honor them starting today—if you will let me.”
(Mydei and Phainon get together. As it turns out, that’s the easy part.)

Pressed against his chest, Phainon has refused to leave Mydei alone the entire day. He’s seen the times when Mydei would be in Okheman nurseries, looking longingly at the babies within. Seen Mydei’s soft and nurturing tendency with children. He’s practically a mother himself in the way he cares for the people around him.
”He deserves this.”
Phainon finds himself thinking. An opportunity to be tender and gentle, a chance to raise a family of his own. He pulls Mydei closer, already rubbing a calloused hand over his abdomen. Baby or not, they’re a family. The little chimeras have been staying with them too, cuddled by Mydei and no longer scratching at Phainon. It is content.
“Is that so? Then porridge and fruits will be all you eat for the coming months Deliverer.”
