Summary
Arlu's situation was what her father would have called delicate. She had willingly taken the oaths of a novice, binding herself to the Athmaz'are until she either completed her education or was dismissed. She was not yet of age, but at fourteen she was old enough to speak for herself, and her father had given his blessing very enthusiastically—her sister had said he was 'living vicariously'. Arlu belonged to the Athmaz'are until such time as her novitiate was completed; even if, like all novices, she was still technically a member of her father's house, it was not meant to matter.
But her father's house was Drazhada, and if there was one thing Arlu had known since she was a little girl, it was that that made all the difference.
Arlu Drazhin joins the Athmaz'are. It is a dream come true, and a greater challenge than she could have ever expected.

Summary
Telimezh woke in the dim twilight of a December afternoon, chilled from more than just the weather. He washed quickly, forced a mouthful of freezing water down his painfully dry throat, and stepped into the nohecharei's common area, avoiding eye contact with his new partner.
The memory of last night was still sharp in his mind—his mind that was, briefly, wholly his own again, the magical bond that had allowed Dazhis Athmaza to hear his thoughts (and, for those last miserable hours, he to hear Dazhis's in return) severed like a rotted limb cut off to save its owner's life.
In the oaths of the nohecharei to their partners is an ancient mazeise art that binds their thoughts together. With one such bond already broken, what does it mean for Telimezh to swear anew?

Summary
To our noble father, Ezechet Bazhevel, Count Bazhevel, greetings.
Winter in Bakhoree is very cold, much colder even than the court. The staff are competent, but they are few, and it is impossible for them to keep the wide halls of the manor heated properly. We have been obliged to wear thick furs to keep warm.
Confinement has not suited the princess. There is very little to occupy our time other than to spend it together. We fear that we shall grow to hate each other ere our relegation end, if indeed it ever should.
Alone at Bakhoree, Stano writes to her father.

Summary
It began, as many things did, at one of Ciris’s parties. The famous tenor Eris Vindar, who had recently come back after a leave of absence from the Zhaö Opera due to contracting a cough and losing his voice, was discussing the travels he had done during his time away.
“We have always wanted to see the Amal’opera,” he was saying, “and so we took a week in Amalo, and made certain to attend every opera house in the city at least once."
Ciris had been engaged in conversation with Osmin Duchenin, but turned his head at once to heed Vindar’s words.
“Well, with respect to present company,” Vindar continued, with a cheeky nod at Osmer Vendecar, a well-known patron of the Amal’opera, “we did not find the Amal’opera the most standout—of course, the singers were magnificently talented, and everything as beautiful as it is famed—but it is another establishment, and quite a different sort of show, which caught our attention…”Ciris Drazhar, now Emperor Varecoriver, is invited by a friend from the opera world to attend the Vermilion Opera’s controversial smash hit, Zhelsu. Neither the show nor anything else about his visit to Amalo is at all like he expected.

Summary
The Wisdom of Choharo has crashed. There were no survivors.
Somehow, the first thought that entered Ciris’s mind was to despair the loss of his exquisitely colorful wardrobe for the dull solemnity of mourning black—and after that, he realized with horror, the cold austerity of imperial white.
It was a stupid thought; there was much more he had lost than the right to dress flamboyantly, but it was one thing he felt he could truly grasp amongst the mess of incomprehensible implications.
Ciris Drazhar does not attend Prince Orchenis's wedding with his father and brothers. This is a very good thing for him, and a very bad thing for the rest of the court.

Summary
As I waited for sleep, my thought strayed to the methods used by the Nazhmorhathveras to hunt the sheleian that ranged on the steppes. No barbarian would have been foolish enough to try to take on a flock; though a sheleis resembled little more than a large stack of poorly cared-for carpets, the adults of a pack would vigorously defend their young. Thick of hide, dense of fur, tusked, and ferocious—the Nazhmorhathveras stalked the steppes in search of a sheleis that had gotten itself separated from the pack. A lone sheleis would flee, in the face of a hunter’s spear, and the hunter would pursue. Not at the desperate pace set by the sheleis; the beast could leave his sight, and still he would track it, at a steady and persistent pace. It might take hours, even a day or more, but eventually the sheleis would collapse from exhaustion, and the hunter would be ready when it did.

Summary
“Who knows the Emperor’s mind better than his wife?” Csevet asked. She looked up at that to fix him with a pointed look, and he flushed slightly. “Well. That would be a whole other degree of scandal. They will accept thee, Csethiro. It is not permanent; they need only recognize thee as speaking for the Emperor until he is recovered.”
“Thou’lt help?” she asked him, a pleading note in her voice.
He only gave her a small smile again, as if he had an idea of what she was thinking. “Of course, Highness.”Maia is incapacitated for several weeks after being poisoned. Csethiro, with Csevet’s aid, keeps the Empire running while he recovers.

Summary
It happened gradually, was the thing. The emperor’s rings were tighter in the evening than the morning; that was normal. And if the fit of the rings changed, little by little, the change wasn’t large enough from day to day for any of them to notice. And then Nemer found himself thinking it was time to contact Dachensol Habrobar about adding some ease to Edrehasivar’s signet ring, and realised all of a sudden that something had changed.
The signet ring had fit perfectly at first, Nemer was sure of it. Hadn’t it? Or was he remembering that wrong? Maybe it had always been a little snug, maybe they had accepted that it didn’t slide on easily in exchange for the security of knowing it wouldn’t slide off easily.
