    Summary

Ivan makes a dumb sound like a dog in heat. Till sticks his cigarette in his mouth and chews on it, eyes narrowed.

“Can you put that out on me?” Ivan asks, after a quick hiccup, looking at Till like he’s in physical pain, eyebrows arched, cheeks flushed, frown deep; big, sharp, stupid snaggletooth dragging against his pouting lips. Saying “no” to that face could count as an offense under the law, Till considers, gulping slowly.

small/unfinished works of various relationships (mainly ivan & till) that have been rotting in my wips. pre-notes for each chapter include warnings and such.

    Summary

Anakt’s 50th class have a field trip to the beach.

“The sky opening up,” Ivan said, “could explain the state after a heavy rainpour, the beginning rays of the sun shining through after an insistent darkness.” Thoughtfully, his eyes had glanced in Till’s direction before turning back to the ceiling above them, where a pixel in the middle of a static cloud flickered. “It was also, some believed, a description of an event that happened during the end of everything. A remaking of sorts. A splitting of the world. Fascinating, no?”

One of Till’s hands had cupped itself over the other, rubbing at each of his knuckles in turn. They’re not too different, he thought. An ending to all of this would be a kind of clearing too.

    Summary

Till and Ivan find a new way to talk things out.

There was always, between them, the looming understanding that ground rules hardly served as ground rules as much as they did mild suggestions or, if Ivan was being particularly irritating, petty challenges.

Don't leave marks above the collarbone or past the elbow. Don’t touch the ribs poking out of my sides. Don’t press your thumb against my snaggletooth. Don't scrape my nails when I’ve painted them. Don’t order me around. Don't touch my piercings. Don’t say my name when you come. Don’t stop just because you noticed me crying. Don’t stare. Don’t look at me like that. God, please, don’t look at me like that.

    Summary

Till seems to be repeating all the same steps from when he was a child in the entirely wrong order.

Does it hurt, he would like to imagine Ivan asking when he speaks next. Till would like to roll his eyes and scoff and say, Has it ever not? What’s new? His eyes trace the curve of Ivan’s back which straightens and bends repeatedly. His hand rubs at it incessantly. There is a minute wince on his face that Till barely catches before it’s forced into the corners of a tight smile. What about you? Till wants to say back. Does it hurt?

    Summary

Till is weaker to Ivan's unusual requests than he'd like to admit.

Ivan had mumbled something inaudible with his cheek pressed against his shoulder. After a minute of Till trying to make sense of it, Ivan repeated, “Sit on me.” Then added a polite, “Please.”

    “Uh,” Till said smartly. “Um.”

    Summary

Till isn't a big fan of this new regular.

“So, what do you work as?” he asks as Till hands him the card reader. If he feels any latent embarrassment at the question, he doesn’t let it show.

As the receipt prints itself out, Till, behind the counter of the coffee shop, stares and blinks once. “A barista,” he says, sharply ripping the receipt out.

Ivan laughs. “Right, of course.” What the hell does this guy want?

    Summary

At home, it seemed everything could be a coincidence, the identicality of every room, her eight adopted sisters who sat at a range between two years older and two years younger than Sua herself, who all had round eyes and dark hair, who were all always dressed in thick satin frills, and whose birthdays fell in succession during the last three months of the year. It was arbitrary yet surgical, the precision with which their mother decided what was worth loving in her children.

Sua would try to deal with this suffocating sameness in small reminders that she could be different, if only in the length of her fingernails, the skew of her smile, the undisciplined shrill of her voice when her sides were tickled. The truth is, she learned these small triumphs from Mizi who already had many strange enthusiasms as a child which gave her a personhood, such as running in circles until she fell over and coming to rest against Sua to mumble with an unwavering passion about nonsense until she made herself break into a fit of giggles.

Every train eventually reaches its destination. Sua has spent her life convinced she could always hear its encroaching whistle chasing her.

    Summary

Till’s eyes are thin slits; his mouth opens just enough to show the corner of his canine: proof that he can bite. Ivan hopes he will.

“You’ll just slobber over whatever bone is thrown your way, won’t you?” Till spits out, giving Ivan’s hair another tug. “Wagging your tail for the best bidder.”

Ivan has a new favorite game. Till is an unwilling participant.

    Summary

“Do you think Till baby likes the food?” Ivan asks.

Till wears a look of abject horror. “Please don’t call it that.”

“I should kill myself if he doesn’t.”

“This can’t be real,” Till whispers, face in his hands.

Something is happening here. It cannot be acknowledged out loud lest it play a role equivalent to a flammable gas leak.

    Summary

John knits his brows. He wants to point out that David is wasting time. That they are running out of time. That there is so little time. But this is how David is: leisurely.

“So you just called me to tell me that there’s something you can’t tell me?” John wouldn’t put it past him.

“No! I called you to tell you that you need to see it,” David says, seriously, then pleadingly adds, “For yourself– John, you need to see it.”

    Summary

Till’s stuck in a rupture, reliving the past and biding his time for the future; occasionally, he’s eased into solid moments of the present with Ivan’s touch.

Till, young and scared, had prompted a fissure between them, only to watch it widen with festering guilt. It was hard to tell when exactly things changed, when they were running their allowance dry at the arcade or sneaking out at night and when Till found himself used to his own company more than anyone else’s, watching Ivan blossom, accepted as a perfect caricature version of himself amongst groups of strangers.

Everyone was just too scared to be different and, by extension, alone. Maybe Till most of all.

    Summary

Tai stares out of the corner of his eyes. “She’ll be off this weekend.”

“I’m happy for her.” It’s what Sami says every time, but he finds it hard to believe his own words now. “She’ll do great,” he tacks on for good measure.

This makes Tai’s expression pause then crack into a crooked smile, the kind he always gives before saying You’re a bad liar.

Ivan is not thrilled with their new arrangement.

“I thought you were busy today.” Till crosses his arms.

“I am,” Ivan says, then, “Was.” He blinks, vision hazy. An oncoming migraine knocks on his forehead. He really shouldn’t be here.

    Summary

Till learns his lessons the hard way more often than not. For example, get better friends; don’t entrust your heart to a man; never agree to parties. Here comes another: don’t piss horoscopes off.

In Ivan’s car, Till finds himself begrudgingly accepting his reality. He’s, in fact, a bunny. And the only one who understands anything he says is his best friend slash lifelong leech slash the guy who said they’re “not really a thing” after kissing him stupid in this very same car. There are worse things that could be happening to him, maybe, probably, not really; life is awful.

    Summary

While heat is the product of movement, the dissipation of energy, the cold cannot be defined as a polar opposite state. Rather, it is a lack thereof. A non-existence. Defined only by what it is given. And any heat gained on one end is entirely lost on the other. Equilibrium is a false act, is the thing.

To say that Till occupied a previously empty space in Ivan's life would not be entirely true as it would be to say that he did not occupy a space at all.

More accurately, on the border of Earth’s atmosphere, there are two meteors, something only the naive would wish on, first running parallel, then ricocheting when they collide: one sent back into the freezing vacuum of space and the other becoming a radiant meteorite, documented in history, remembered by the resounding crater it first creates, widens, fills, then leaves behind.

It was a matter of learning about the impossible and then learning that that’s all it would be.

    Summary

Till’s sharp eyes land on him, distrust clear in them. ‘You’re up to something bad, and I won't like it,’ they basically scream. Ivan has to contain himself from openly grinning at that.
    Instead, he keeps on talking.

“You’re hungry; it’s factual. Because of this, you need blood; real blood, human blood, not those substitute pills you insist on taking.”

“Tell me something I don't know, you jackass,” Till practically growls. Patience has never been one of his virtues, after all.
For his sake, Ivan chooses to cut the formalities short.

“Well,” he says then, “I don’t think you’ve noticed you have a human right here.”

Because Ivan is a terrible friend first and a man without any sense of self-preservation second, he ends up pinned on the floor with Till's canines stuck in his neck.

The magnitude encapsulated in a single iris.

Ivan slowly lifts his head, and it’s like watching the time lapse of a flower bloom, bangs falling away like crinkling petals to reveal his slanted, dark eyes. Lashes thick, gaze sweet, not unlike nectar.

“Mm?” Till says distracted. Translation: What do you want? Ivan’s got that subtle look of anticipation in the curve of his brows, his lowered head, his raised stare: a pleading puppy, it all reads.

    Summary

Ivan's been feeling sick. Till regrettably cares and tries to help. Things only get worse somehow. Like. Very bad.

Smile small and tired and nothing like him at all, Ivan says, “Till, I’m perfectly fine,” then proceeds to spontaneously combust into flames. Literally. The fire alarm goes off.

By the time Till’s able to comprehend the scene in front of him, all that’s left is a pile of ashes. He blinks once. Twice.
