Daylight like a flashbang glimmers off golden scales, the scent of melting rock and burning flesh is almost as powerful as the very sound of the compound shaking, the screams of men who signed their death warrants as soon as they thought to lay a hand on a dragon’s hoard.

Soap sighs, looking back out to the ocean again, still gently caressing Simon's hair and face. "I'm…so happy," he finally says, confessing it to the chilly breeze and Simon's warmth at his back. "So unbelievably happy, but the only reason I'm here is because of you. But there are other selkies. Just like me. Who dinnae have a savior."
Simon tenses, breathes out a heavy, hot breath against Soap's neck. "Daniel," he mutters.
"Ye remember his name?" Soap asks.
"'Course I do," Simon growls, more alert now. "I followed my nose, went to his house before coming to get you. Had to make sure you weren't there, first."
"So you know where he lives," Soap says.
Simon nods. "Him. And his stolen selkie wives."

Soap's career as a soldier was ended abruptly, and completely against his will, by a GSW to the head about a year and a half ago. He's never quite sure. His memory wasn't what it was. Oh yea, remembers Ma, and Da, and the family. Parts of his time with unit. Knows Kyle is his absolute best mate ever. Knows that he's desperately in love with Simon, wherever the fuck he is. Living in a flat in London, he's having a rough go of it. Disability doesn't do much in the way of paying the rent, especially when he accidentally pays more times than he should. Just a grand guy like that. So when the prospect of a victimless crime, where his demolitions skills could actually be used again came up... how could he say no? It wouldn't be long. Only reason he was even in London was because this was where he was sure Simon would find him. Simon would come for him. Had to.

Men and women of the depths, serenading soldiers and sailors and seamen to their untimely deaths, tainting the waters red as their flesh turns to feast. Sharp teeth and venom and claws, cracking bones and cartilage and tearing skin from muscle. Deceptively soft-looking predators, of flowing hair and smooth features and lean frames, a mimicry of their prey's kind from the waist up.
Until humankind had evolved. Stronger sea vessels, more muscular bodies, larger packs, and worst of all, small lumps impairing their hearing. They became immune to the sirens’ song. They had become unreliable prey, with their large numbers and tools and metal projectiles.
Over time, sirens were but a myth to the humans, violently usurped from their throne as rulers of the waves.
When the waters grow warmer and food becomes scarcer, a siren still has to eat.

If one asked any of the former clans of the North, the story of King MacTavish and the North Star, they might say that the sorcerer fell into a trap laid by clever King MacTavish. That he bound the White Wolf’s wrists and feet and put him in a collar of cold iron to suppress his magic, brought him to his stronghold and tortured him into obedience. Others might say that the White Wolf came of his own accord.
Others, those who look over their shoulders and know they speak of treason, might hint that it was North Star who found the King first, that he lured King MacTavish into his lair and put him under a spell, seduced him and made the King fall in love with him, to whatever end he might have.
Still others claim that their union was ordained by the gods, that they gave the King a vision when he was a boy, tied the red string of fate to both their hands, and that it is a blessing indeed, to unite magic and might under one banner and keep their people safe.
Naturally, none of these stories are true.
