“I thought you liked Rand,” was the first thing Mat’s mouth could come up with. Because it was solely his mouth responsible for the words coming out of it; his brain had long since keeled over dead. Obviously, since nobody in possession of a functional brain would bring up another man when he had the most beautiful bloody woman in the world right there and interested in kissing him.
“I do,” Elayne said, blush deepening. “But I like you too. I like both of you. Does that…make sense?”
Mat thought about it for a moment, then nodded. There were so many pretty girls in the world, and he’d certainly liked more than one at the same time before. But how could Elayne think he was pretty enough to like at the same time as Rand? Rand had always been the prettiest boy in all of the Two Rivers, and maybe all of Andor, and maybe all of the Westlands, and maybe all of the world. He should’ve been able to easily eclipse Mat in Elayne’s eyes.
And yet, Elayne was fond of him. Of him, in addition to Rand.

Rand presses on and takes Ebou Dar, pushing the Seanchan back into the sea and discovering someone unexpected in the city.
The palace was in an uproar.
Mat carefully maneuvered around the rushing servants — both those wearing Tylin's House Mitsobar's colors and the barely-dressed slaves that the Seanchan had brought with them or… or created here.
"Lord Mat, what are you doing in the halls?" one of Tylin’s people fussed at him as she passed by — no broad grin on her face today. "I'm certain your things have been packed already, or the queen can have new clothes made for you. You must find her majesty. She will be most cross if she is forced to leave without you." But she was in no mood to grab him and take him to Tylin, off on her own hurried and panic-driven errands.
Forced to leave?
And Mat felt something that he hadn't felt since he'd woken up here in the palace, every part of his body sharp with pain and a looming dread at the back of his mind when the first sound he heard was Tylin's voice — he felt hope.
It had to be Rand and his Asha'man. Nothing else could cause fear like this.

In a summer set before the events of the series would have taken place, Rand asks Mat a question that ends up taking them down a different path.
"You- ah, you-" Rand licked his lips, nervously. He wasn't quite able to say what he wanted, so he tried another tactic. "I think Egwene wants me to kiss her."
Perrin dropped his half-carved wooden block.
"What makes you say that?" Perrin asked, picking it back up again, and returning to his whittling. "Did she- did she say something?"
"She's wanted that for ages," Mat said, as though it were obvious, and Perrin dropped the block again. Rand eyed him curiously. He wasn't normally clumsy. Mat propped himself up on one of his knees, focusing on Rand. "Why do you think I suggested you learn how to- ah, that's what this is about, isn't it? You do want some practice, after all?"

Pitch-black smoke curls up into the sky, smelling of metal and gasoline. Orange flames flicker through the shattered windows of the main cabin and the bow is dipping into the water. For a few long seconds, all they can do is stare. The realization sinks into them one by one as their wide eyes trace the telltale holes in the side of the boat.

This is mainly just boys falling in love with each other, multiple times over, with some cosmic framing to connect it all together.

"Yes, for the crab show. " His mother pauses in pouring Massimo more wine. "We discussed this back in April. You did remember, right?"
"I… sure did," Luca says weakly. "I guess that means I'll be coming home with you guys tonight, then. And staying. For the next week. All seven days of it. Constantly."
Alberto squeezes Luca’s knee. "We have the rest of summer to hang out."
"Uh-huh," Luca says and reaches for the wine bottle. "Sure. Cool. Peachy."(or: Luca just wants an hour to bang his stupidly hot boyfriend in peace. What he gets is a cockblocking from all of Portorosso.)

Luca waits at the pier. Alberto strips off his shirt and dives into the water to swim the rest of the way over. He pulls himself up, shaking himself off like a dog. Water sprays off him in droplets, catching the sunlight and looking like his scales are flying right off him. Luca does his absolute best not to stare. Alberto’s grown up a lot since they met; his biceps are twice as thick as Luca’s and his shoulder-to-waist ratio is truly inspiring. A droplet of water snakes its way between his pectorals. It leaves a shimmering lilac line behind it that Luca, embarrassingly, wants to touch.
“Oh, gosh,” he says, trying not to giggle stupidly. “Do you know that you sort of glow in the sun? It looks really good.”
Alberto blinks. He goes curiously pink, scratching the back of his neck and clearing his throat. "Oh."
Now this is a possibility he did not foresee – Alberto doesn’t know that Luca is attracted to him, because Alberto doesn’t know he’s attractive. Later, Luca sprints upstairs to take his notebook from its hiding place under Giulia’s bed and starts his analysis -Could I actually have a chance with Alberto Scorfano?

Alberto returns the sentiment, then follows his Papà up the stairs. He momentarily toys with the idea of mentioning the feeling that’s been bothering him since the afternoon, but ultimately decides against it. He’s convinced he’s imagining the whole thing, and he doesn’t want to worry anyone over what is most likely nothing.
It’s all in his head; just another stupid Bruno that needs banishing.

"I think it would kill me," Luca says after a while, quiet but certain. Alberto can tell by his tone that he's not joking, and he props up on his elbows to listen while Luca rubs his thumbs together and stares up at the dappled sunlight that ripples over them as the waves go in and out, that warms the water all around them. "If I had to live like this all the time. Never going above the surface, never seeing anything of the world, never learning anything new, for the rest of my life? I really think it would kill me."
Alberto doesn't know what to say.
So he says, "Jeez, is that what you've been lying here thinking about?"

Luca is having an internal crisis remembering the last time he lied to his own parents and everything that happened because of it. It takes every fiber in his body not to blurt out the truth. He has to clamp his hands down over his mouth, and doesn't look at Massimo, either, when the large man's eyes skip over to him.
"Alright," Massimo says, "If you're certain."

So. Here are the facts as you see them.
Fact number one: Giulia is going to be on the train for Genova in two days. She's going back home--because Genova is her home, apparently, and you're still grappling with the idea that there are places outside your island and Portorosso, BIG ones, they keep telling you, all over the globe--where she'll spend the next nine or so months going to school.
Fact number two: You and Luca now own your very own Vespa. It's not road-ready yet, and it might not be for a while, which is fine actually because it turns out now that the Paguros aren't going to send Luca away to the bottom of the ocean, you're going to have to whittle them down into giving him permission to run away with you.
Fact number three: That's not even really a plan that makes sense, if you think about it for more than a few minutes at a time.
Fact number four: You haven't forgotten that Luca doesn't actually want to run away with you anymore. He's just pretending he never said it.
