He hurts everything he touches, ungrateful and bratty until the moment it’s yanked from his grip, the tips of his fingers left torn and bloody, hands empty nonetheless. It would be easier, he thinks, to just stop. Stop caring. Stop holding on at all. Losing people has got to be so much easier if you don’t love them.

But he’s just so lonely, all the time, and he doesn’t know how to live with it. He barely knows how to think or breathe or exist sometimes. It’s all too much. Loving people is scary and being lonely is even scarier. He feels constantly bogged down, neither option a viable one in the long-run.

    ———

Love is not a word either of them say easily anymore. Even now, Bruce can’t seem to force it out. It lodges in his throat or sticks to his tongue, a phantom weight that he can feel, choking and sour. He thinks it, though, thinks it every single day. It flows in his veins, as sure as the rush of air in and out of his lungs. He feels it, desperately, a physical sensation in his chest and his throat and even the very tips of his fingers and toes. Bruce breathes and squeezes tighter, wishing that for once he could say it.

    ———

He wants to be a good son again, even if the person raising him is different now.

    Summary

“Wow,” Will breathes out, just on this edge of teasing. “You sound very confident about this.”

“Well,” Mike shrugs, swallowing hard in a desperate attempt to soothe his very, very dry mouth, “I don’t know why someone wouldn’t be interested in you.”

“Oh?” Will says, and it’s definitely teasing now, enough for Mike to feel himself turning warm, all down his neck and to the tips of his own – sadly unpatterned – socks. “Someone?”

“Yeah.” Mike nods. Oh, god. This is fine. “In a very arbitrary sense of the word. Just– people. Someone.”

Mike is approximately ninety-eight percent sure that his feelings are requited. That last two percent, however, has really been throwing him for a loop.

He froze over in New York. He knows he did. And this, Sydney in his lap, hand on his face. This feels dangerously close to thawing out.

It’s like there’s some feeling deep in his chest, that was long ago beaten badly enough to crawl out the light completely, but is now, somehow, emboldened, and emerging from its hiding place.

    ———

“When I was twenty, and you used to come into that stupid diner, I burned so much food staring at you,” he says. “You, uh, you wore your hair natural back then, in those curls, I… I almost got fired, Syd. I was so fucking mesmerized. I could stare at you forever.”

“I was staring right back at you,” she says, with a small smile. “You knew that, didn’t you?”

“I thought you were annoyed the food was taking so long,” he says.

    Summary

On a perfectly average Tuesday night – as far as any night can be called perfectly average anymore nowadays – the sky goes pitch black above Manhattan, a violent storm rattles the roofs, vivid blue and purple lightning bolts illuminate the clouds.
Once it is over, as suddenly as it began, news trickles in of difficult-to-explain phenomena occurring worldwide: The statue of liberty has changed color to a bright pink, an exact replica of the great wall of China has appeared across the Sahara desert, it rains feathers in Copenhagen for several hours, every single stapler on Sumba Island turns into a coat hanger, and Tony Stark wakes up from an impossible-to-wake-up-from coma.

Tony nods. “Meet Morgan’s pet sheep.”

“Goat!” Morgan says. She clambers over Pepper and presses her nose to the window, leaving a tiny foggy circle on the glass.

    “It’s a llama,” Pepper corrects.

“That,” Peter says, “is an alpaca.”
