    Bookmarker's Notes

I have never wanted a missing scene as much as I wanted this one – it solves the whole finale for me, weaves in and transforms details from the episode. Intense, wistful, grave, gorgeous. They oscillate perfectly between serious emotion and light banter.

    Summary

Patrick is just getting ready to leave when he spots him across the bar. The man has his head thrown back in laughter, the lines of his neck long and graceful. His smile is its own gas light, cutting through the smoke of the bar like sunshine off the Seine, a literal impossibility at this late hour. Patrick can’t hear his laugh over the music, but he doesn’t need to. He’s so busy watching, he doesn’t see the waitress drop another drink on the table until it’s too late, and she’s already moved on to serving the next table. Now that it’s here, he’s not going to turn it down.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Magisterial. This is a historical journey that takes on some of the darkest realities of an era and explores how queer possibilities find a way to survive between their cracks. Its scope and ambition are breathtaking and pay off completely. The prose has an intensity that often appeals to me, sentences dripping with images and emotions. It's a story where happiness glitters against a backdrop of depair, sometimes challenging to read but always utterly beautiful.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Obviously this is outside my usual bookmarking purview, but honestly it is one of my all time favorite fics. I can't imagine writing like this - a sparkling stream of consciousness that pours through every moment. David and Patrick go slow and this series goes slow, deliciously slow, letting you feel literally everything erotic (hot damn) and romantic and uncertain. I have a deep connection with this David - the David I wanted and needed for myself laid bare so perfectly.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Phryne and Mac's first meeting at school (Mac's POV) is wryly mischievous and perfect. There's some proto-gay Mac and proto-detective Phryne and you can see why they instantly connect. Original and clever!

    Bookmarker's Notes

Jack's entire biography wrapped up into this moment. I love the secondary character scenes - Mac and Rosie especially – maybe more than anything. But it's also just exactly how Jack would be romantic: wryly and without illusions, quietly carrying the weight of his history, fully cognizant of the ways he's been swept off his feet and brave enough to embrace them all the same.
