So that’s how Tommy ‘Theseus’ Watson ended up standing in front of a 15-meter behemoth of sheer, overhanging monstrosity called the Olympic lead wall with only two coherent thoughts making it across his mind.

    1. OHMYGODIMGONNAFUCKINGDIE
    2. When was my college essay due? Wait, what day is today? Why am I not writing about being at the Olympics again?

    Or,

Tommy has been rock climbing since he was seven. Now, he's sixteen years old and about to take on the Olympic Sport Climbing Finals.

Without hesitation, Tommy turned on the megaphone. He leaned out the window. The feedback screech added nicely to the scene.

“Fuck off. People are trying to sleep here.”

Without waiting for a reaction, he turned and closed the window.

time for some real sleep he thought.

But fuck, Tommy can be good. Tommy can be Siren's—no, Tommy can be Wilbur’s perfect little charity project. He can do whatever he’s told when he’s told, he can be nice and fucked up when needed and he can obey, and he can be Siren’s for as long as Wilbur is his.

He knows Wilbur, and he wants to keep this, so he’s got to keep Wilbur interested. He’s got to keep Siren interested. Wilbur likes an argument, likes a fight, but wants to dote. Tommy can do that. Siren, he wants Tommy to be fiery and passionate, but to never question that he’s Siren’s. Siren wants Tommy to never be unsure of who he belongs to, who is the most important person to him. Tommy can do that.

Siren wants Tommy like a child would want a pretty doll, and Wilbur wants someone that can keep up with him. Tommy isn’t a person to him, but that’s fine. Tommy doesn’t need to be seen as a person, because people take care of their dolls. He needs to be a doll that Wilbur would never get bored of, never get rid of.

Point was, everyone knew that if you had a chance to escape the reality of most citizens you had to take it no matter how morally right or wrong it was. Which was why when Tommy woke up to find himself chained down to a bed in a huge room he did not feel panic, but joy.

    Summary

There is a truth whispered through generations: people’s hearts are made of many things.

There is the usual, yes—blood and muscle and fragile tissue. But more, too. Some are built from sadness, carrying the weight only Atlas is said to have known. Others beat with the steadiness of stone, or the brittle ache of bone, calcified and splintering.

There are hearts of soil, steady and patient. Hearts of ocean—salt-brined, tidal, storm-wracked. Some burn with the loyalty of a hound, or cry out with the voice of a cockatoo, bright-feathered and unquiet. Some are fox-hearted, all sharp teeth and soft fur, cunning stitched into every pulse.

But, oh — oh, to have a chameleon heart. A heart that shifts and shimmers, molding to its world with every breath. A heart that matches the color of the room, the tone of a voice, the expectation in another’s eyes. Always beating, always changing — never quite settling on its own, never belonging to itself.

This is the heart the L’Manbergeans have. This is the heart Tommy has. This is the heart that wins.
