Summary
Across the cave, Neil took the moment to lean into Todd just a bit more, still looking forward. It was enough to set Todd’s pulse racing.
“Say, we get Todd to share a poem sometime and we’ll really have a party!” Charlie japed.
Oh.
Now that really set his pulse racing.

Summary
Todd Anderson enters Welton his junior year believing that everything inside of him is worthless and embarrassing. He doesn’t want the world to see him because he’s afraid of being a disappointment. He’s not used to being accounted for.
Neil Perry is a fine student at Welton. He lives to please others. He lives to serve his family and to play the part of the dutiful son and the golden boy student. When he finds something to live for that isn’t what his father wants he feels alive for the first time. He begins to live for himself.

Neil and Todd change each other’s lives, and fall in love along the way.

"In some ways, Welton was what he’d expected it to be. Its grand entrance hall, long-stretched grasslands, neatly dressed students, and various other things had been exactly as he’d imagined. Though, his roommate and his friends had not.
It wasn’t that Todd didn’t like them- they were alright, for private school snobs, anyway - but they were so intrusive. He’d always been more of a private person, especially in places where he didn’t know anyone. Shaking hands, introductions, small talk- he’d rather not. He didn’t like talking.
Truth was, he was too ashamed. "
Or, Todd has had a stutter for most of his life and avoids talking to anyone as much as he can, though that can get a bit tricky if your roommate is Neil Perry.

Todd had never really felt beautiful. His eyebrows were too far apart, his face too slim, his body too soft and feminine – he sometimes flinched when he saw his reflection. And he often heard that it’s the inside that matters, so it should be fine – if you exclude the fact that he was so thoroughly rotten, so completely broken. Sometimes, Todd wished he was more like Jeffrey. Jeffrey, who could make anyone smile, Jeffrey with the perfect grades, Jeffrey with his handsome face and broad hands. The perfect son.
