Over the years, a lot of things change. People leave, people return, and our bodies just keep getting older. The ways in which we deal with our pasts change, as well, new skills, new breakdowns, new twists on the old horrors.
But those pasts don't change. That room, featureless walls and steel furnishings and the crack of a broken bone. The muffled sound of a gunshot. Blood in the gutter.
It's not easy. But they do, both, get used to it.

All right?” Goro wipes his face with his sleeve and glowers at him: Great Akira the Moralizer, who knows exactly what everyone else deserves. Perfect, beloved Akira.

Summary
Akechi turns to face him, suddenly too close, breaths mingling in two separate clouds of white mist as they meet cold air. “Ren, I am not being subtle here. You’re not that dead-brained. So don’t be fucking coy and pretend you don’t know I would bend to your will if only you pulled the right strings. Is that not why you’re here?”
Ren sets aside the implication of Akechi’s words to unpack later on. He finds it in him to say, “I am here because I want you. Knowing the outcome doesn’t stop me from wanting you.”
Akechi scoffs and it smells faintly like nicotine.
Goro Akechi tells Ren about his death earlier on.

Akechi's had a good day, and Ren has had a bad one. He’s going to show up to their final meeting smiling and well-rested. He’s looking forward to it. This is going to be easy. It’s going to be fun.
The phone call comes just as he reaches Shibuya station. Akechi leans against the wall, shadowed by a pillar at the Ginza gate, as he takes it. “There’s been a change of plan,” says the man he loathes more than anyone else alive. “Stand by.”

Summary
Behind Akechi, framed by the trees and roofs down the slope, Ren can see the sea. He can't hear the sound of the waves, not from this far away, but he can smell the salted air on his skin, on his pillow, already suffusing their scattered possessions. Ren can't remember the last time he saw the sea outside of Tokyo Bay. He never had reason to go anywhere farther than that.

Summary
Around two years had passed since the collapse of the Metaverse and Masayoshi Shido’s earning of a far kinder sentence than he deserved, in Goro Akechi’s opinion anyway. Goro had long since abandoned his life of dealing death, trying to awkwardly settle into a new, normal one with the wild card dealt to him by the gods named Akira Kurusu.
All seemed well. Neat, bland, and practically average except for Akira himself, whom Goro had no clue what to do with.
Then one night Akira was abducted, and Goro quickly realized he’d give up a normal life and play one more twisted game just to get his Joker back.
