Once they let him go, he felt too unsettled to drive home. But he didn’t live unreasonably far and he could pick his car up tomorrow. His “success” as Command in the training exercise meant a job at the Park, effective immediately. As if it would take mere hours to put his betrayal in the rearview.
Instead, James found himself wandering in the wrong direction—the Cartwrong direction, if he was feeling clever, which he wasn’t, really. All he knew was that he had to see River in the flesh, that it couldn’t all end over a comm line. Didn’t what they have—had was probably more accurate now—deserve that?

Phoenix hurls one of the footballs his way, where he’s ready to run to a touchdown. A second after Rooster jumps, catches it and curls it into his body, he’s shot out of the sky by a brutal tackle. The wind is knocked out of him by the blow as he and his assailant fall onto the hot ground. The rough sand coats his back while a sweaty chest presses against his own. Rooster squints open his eyes to none other than fucking Hangman, sporting his trademark grin.

Summary
When Bucky returns from work that night, he looks beat, even more so than usual. He always tries to plaster on a smile for Steve, but Steve can see right through it, observant and intuitive as ever, to the sweat and the exhaustion he must feel down to his bones.
The job down at the docks is still new, and though Bucky’s always been an athlete, built and determined, the work is strenuous and long, definitely an adjustment from the more relaxed jobs of boyhood, delivering newspapers and groceries.
Not only that, but Bucky’s a grown man now. A grown man living with his unemployed, constantly ill best friend who everyone calls queer behind his back.

When Natasha first laid eyes on Sam, she knew she wanted to know him. She wasn’t sure exactly how but nonetheless, it wasn’t a feeling she was used to, having willed herself to suppress it, her desire for human connection. It had been easier that way, for most of her life, but a few people had slipped through the cracks.
Steve was one of them. And for better or worse, she trusted his judgment. So if he was friends with this charming, smiley guy who Natasha was instantly drawn to, he had to be a decent person. She wanted to ask Steve about him when they drove off but thought it would come across the wrong way- or rather, the right one. Natasha was in the habit of pressing Steve on his personal life, but not at the risk of revealing anything about her own.
