An innocuous question, but Xiao still tenses as if it's some kind of test. Of course he remembers, he would be loath to forget—forever present in his mind as though it were yesterday.
Of when he was smaller, and without purpose. Still freshly torn from a life of wanton murder and devastation—but given a chance to become something more, something meaningful, something that serves and protects rather than kills and destroys.

His teary eyes scanned all over her body, finding it worse than what Sarrum had described. Her claws were twitching and bleeding on the dirty ground. There was no water in sight and she looked thirsty while her eyes looked milky and unseeing. Yet, she seemed to recognise him somehow. For a moment, her gaze cleared and she nuzzled her forehead against Merlin’s. Cuts among her side, red coloring her white scaled bloody.“Merlin, what the hell are you doing! Come back here! NOW! It will eat you!”
But Merlin’s glare found only Sarrum’s who seemed more confused than anything. And that look, that innocence feigning, pleased expression, blinded Merlin with pure, unaltered rage. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HER!”

“Did you get any sleep, bunny?” Ash spoke softly, voice still raspy. An equally husky voice replied.
“Not a lot. Hurts.” The autumn air growing steadily more chill was wearing on Eiji’s hurt ankle, a constant throbbing impacting his life in different severity day to day. The day before he had been working outside with a client, returning home exhausted and in a foul mood. Even the painkillers and hot water flask couldn’t truly soothe the ache, Ash had tried to massage his legs but it only agitated it further. Ash knew he hadn’t slept well.
“I’ll bring your meds. Try to sleep some more,” he sat up, jostling the cat who jumped to the floor. He pressed a soft kiss to the crown of his husband’s head and moved his feet to touch the floor. A warm hand held his wrist before he could leave, skin soft with thick callouses still left over from his youth.
