Maybe Ilya wants someone who will let him take charge. Shane isn’t that kind of person; he desperately clings to control with everything he has. He folds his clothes before sex and cleans his windows after Ilya fucks him against them. He controls his food portions, nutrition, his training schedule, image, and public appearances. He’s competitive. He would never roll over and take anything he didn’t want to.
The thought makes his stomach clench. The one place he doesn’t cling desperately to control is in the bedroom. He lets himself be molded, shaped, and coaxed into anything Ilya wants when they fuck. Shane knows, logically, that Ilya doesn’t really think he’s boring. Not in a mean way, not in a way that’s meant to gnaw at him. He is boring. He wears the clothes his stylist picks out for him, he does ad campaigns, and he tries to look sexy instead of uncomfortable. He puts a thousand accent pillows on his bed because his interior designer tells him to. He wears the Rolex watch and makes sure he wears it well. He knows Ilya is just poking fun at him. Ilya doesn’t really mean he’s boring; he means Shane is comfortable- that he’s safe, and that he hasn’t had very many safe things in his life. Shane is happy to be that, if that’s what Ilya wants (if that’s what he likes).

Shane took a moment, visibly digesting that in his head. Eyebrows scrunched, eyes locked onto the crease between the couch cushions. Ilya pats his knee, giving him a moment.
“Have you tied someone up?” He finally asks, quietly.

He thinks of Ilya’s commanding tone: “Hollander, here”, “take it for me”, or Shane’s personal favorite, “kneel.” Shane, through all these years, has been amazed that to Ilya these little commands are so casual, just a part of fucking for him. To Shane, these words are all consuming. They shut off the hyperactive part of his brain and he can just… enjoy. The square in front of the rink was plastered with posters of the players, ticket prices, and the location of games. Nowhere was there a poster of the Montreal Mighties because the team Shane played for was, according to everyone in that building, not the main attraction.
After all, it didn't matter that in their last game Shane scored more goals in the first period than most do all game, or that he won every face off, or that he can out-skate anyone on any of the teams in his league. No, what mattered was that three months before his rookie year his traitorous body pushed itself into a heat and any chance he had of playing pro had vanished with it.
