"So…" Zoro drawls, suddenly all but looming over him. One of those stupidly thick arms drapes onto the back countertop, casually bracketing Sanji's flank. He feels it in his spine as Zoro drums the wood under his fingers. "You get me anything?"
Sanji sends his boss a haughty glare, determined to not read into it—or give himself away, for that matter. "With the paychecks you cut me? Maybe back in the day I could afford to do that, grandpa."
Zoro flinches subtly, scoffing. "Now I'm so ancient I could be your grandpa."
"You're like twice my age," Sanji jeers, the thrill of a rare upper hand boosting his confidence.
"Little less than that," his boss grouses.
"By two years." Sanji twists the knife, physically unable to help himself. "Okay, daddy. That better?"

“This garchu thing. It’s cute. So is it equivalent to kissing for minks, or no?”
Now Pedro is forced to back out of Sanji’s space, to properly choke around the cough of surprise in his throat. It takes a long time to recover from the shock enough to answer, but eventually he croaks out, “It is different, yes. Kissing is uncommon in mink society, but we are aware the practice exists.”
He receives an imp’s grin, along with, “Uncommon, huh? But not unheard of.”
Pedro coughs again, but this time at the direction of the conversation, rather than surprise. He licks his lips and whiskers. “A matter of physical differences, you see. It is not a standard cultural practice, mainly due to the variety of our mouths.”

“Hm?” Zoro paused, casting his good eye over his shoulder. Sanji was frowning, rubbing the back of his neck underneath the small low ponytail his hair was gathered into, taking a wide look around the docks. He glanced back, catching Zoro’s eye, and flushed, snapping upright.
“Well the sun’s setting soon, isn’t it? I’ve only got a few hours left to find a gift before we sail back to the ship-” He was already stamping off towards a cobblestone staircase leading back to the shopping district, swearing - “I hate you so much!”
Zoro laughed, earrings glinting in the orange sunlight, watching Sanji scurry with that book tucked in his arms like a newborn.
“Love you too, cook!”---
Now in their early thirties, Zoro and Sanji are about to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary, and against all odds, the gift Zoro got Sanji was perfect. Perhaps... a little too perfect. Maybe he's imagining things, but it feels to Zoro like his husband has been treating him more distantly than usual, and enough is enough - he's determined to figure out the root of the problem, because he misses him too damn much not to.

“Zoro,” Sanji called out, his voice dry and croaking. Zoro had been standing some ways off on the beach with arms folded, and had started half-jogging once Usopp started yelling, likely assuming it to be his usual exaggeration, but after hearing Sanji’s voice he was bounding across the beach, kicking sand behind him in great bursts. ... Sanji’s head lolled on his shoulders enough to catch the closest expression Zoro had ever made to fear. Ooh, he must really look like a wreck. This was the right choice.
Usopp and Brook were speaking over each other in hysterics and Zoro was reaching out to help shoulder some of Sanji’s dead weight - Sanji took a deep, shaky breath and summoned the last of his strength to drag his arm from around Brook’s shoulder and throw it around Zoro’s instead, collapsing against his chest. All four men fell silent.
“Zoro- please-” Sanji rasped, and he saw Zoro’s good eye widen, his lips barely parted- “I need you, Zoro.”
And he gripped both sides of his head to drag him into the sloppiest kiss of his life before promptly blacking out. -

Summary
It's all too common a scene - Sanji can only admit he wants Zoro when he's drunk, Zoro has to grapple with knowing he and Sanji could be so happy if only Sanji could bring himself to be honest when they're both sober, and in the morning he has to deal with things going back just the way they were without hope of any resolution between them, sexual or otherwise.
Except this time it's the morning-after and Sanji is dropping heavy hints he remembers EXACTLY what happened between them during their last drunken rendezvous-
Except EXCEPT they didn't actually manage to DO anything, so what the hell is it that Sanji remembers?Aka. "it's sexy when Sanji has to - or chooses to - vocalise what he wants before he can get it", the fic. What was originally PWP that ran away from me and now covers Sanji's load-bearing heterosexuality (self-inflicted), character introspection for he and Zoro both, and a burgeoning romance. Complete but may be expanded on.

He tries pushing against the outside of the plant, leverage to pull himself out, but the ridges of the leafy petals dig into his skin and lock against each other tighter.
