Ex-spy/assassin ZZS works at a haunted house. WKX visits with Gu Xiang and Cao Weining.
Both of them are their usual crazy selves and behave like it (surprisingly, nobody gets stabbed).There was nothing in particular hiding him from sight, but it was rare that anyone noticed him before he wanted them to. Even the overly anxious ones who immediately scanned the entire room tended to glance right over him. It was a part of the script, but Zhou Zishu was pretty sure he was the only employee there who actually managed to pull it off. Who knew that spying skills would overlap so much with casual work at the seasonal haunted house?

“Exactly.” Sizhui kneels until he’s at eye level. “When a plant gets taller, it grows into the ground, too. And when their roots get strong, they get stronger, too. They can grow to the side, or up toward the sun. And their roots reach so, so deep, that no one can move them, no one can even touch them.”
Sizhui leans just far enough forward to wipe the dirt off his cheek with a thumb. “And when we say this is your home, that’s what we mean. We want you to grow here, however you want. And stay for as long as you want to stay.”

The sight of the blade, emerging from Jiang Cheng’s chest, just under his heart, was something Wei Wuxian would relive in a thousand nightmares. “Go,” Jiang Cheng rasped, blood already welling at the corners of his mouth. For a long moment, Wei Wuxian simply couldn’t move, despite his thrumming panic and the shouts, the noise emanating from the rest of the Wen soldiers, coming hot on the heels of the one who’d just killed his brother.
It wasn't conscious thought that brought the borrowed sword around and stabbed his brother’s murderer through the eye; only instinct, only rage.
Jiang Cheng didn’t even make a sound as he fell, the Wen soldier’s sword still piercing his chest, as the one who’d wielded it also fell, dead. “Jiang Cheng, Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian chanted through numb lips, stooping over him, touching his slack and bloodless face. He couldn’t feel anything. “No, no, no, no—”

Jiang Cheng dies directly before the start of the Sunshot campaign. WWX has to step up as zongzhu and rebuild the Jiang.
This is the one with the demon chicken. Also the one that makes me want to scold Nie Huaisang and hit Lan Xichen.
The ending leaves more unresolved than I really like (and I don't even mean the obvious thing; after all, WWX is good at doing the impossible), but it's satisfying enough. It's just that a lot of things are introduced very late in the story. It feels a bit as if there was supposed to be another arc of which only some condensed parts remain. When not in the mood for that, the end of chapter 44 is a pretty good place to stop.

The Wen were all monsters. Nie Mingjue’d said it a thousand times and meant it every time. It was why he’d pushed for miezu for Wen Ruohan’s direct relations, for the rest of the Wen sect members being put into work camps and all the remaining Wen outside of it to be confined. It was what they deserved.
It wasn’t until he stared down at a terrified, crying toddler protected by a terrified, desperate kid (he knows Wei Wuxian is the same age as Nie Huaisang, it doesn’t matter, they’re both kids) that he questioned whether that made him a monster too.

After thirteen years in the Burial Mounds, the Yiling Patriarch finally makes a public reappearance. Civilians are scared. Cultivators are outraged. Sect Leaders are concerned. Wei Wuxian has been too quiet, they say, and nobody knows what dark horrors the Burial Mounds may now contain.
Wei Wuxian wouldn't quite call them dark horrors, but the description wasn't too far off.
(tl;dr Wei Wuxian lives, raises a whole gaggle of demonic cultivator children, and the cultivation world panics.)
