Phoenix stands, crossing the room in a few quiet steps, a teasing grin already tugging at his mouth.
“You couldn’t even last fifteen min—”
He stops as the door swings open.
His mother stands there in the hallway, blinking up at him beneath the hum of the dorm light. She pulls her coat tighter around herself with one hand, the other holding the strap of an overnight bag slung across her shoulder. Her hair is slightly frizzy from the rain, the curls at her temple limp from humidity. Her umbrella is nowhere in sight. She must’ve walked from her car.
“Oh,” Phoenix says, startled. His breath catches on the shift in reality. “Hi.”

A fact that, on its face, sounds almost absurd. Especially when one considers he had been living as a pirate for nearly three years by then, sailing under a banner most civilised ports would recognise as a death sentence, were they not “pirate-friendly”.
