Summary
“Morning! What can I get for ya?” The man piped, easy and light, and it tugged at something in the back of his mind, at that pain in the center of his chest. All at once, in a flash of sickeningly sweet recognition, that almost made him feel nauseous.
'Mornin’, ugh. Wanna cuppa? Was gonna throw one on before it got too cold to get out of bed again –
Anything I can get for ya, Jon? It can’t be easy, with your hand -
(If it’s not too late already -)'He swallowed, throat suddenly entirely too dry, and felt a little like he was going to collapse. The pain in his lungs sharpened, going quick and stabbing for just a second, and he choked out a sound that might have been a tight, constricted 'um'.
The man at the counter, with his oddly familiar voice, and copper hair, and bright blue eyes that were staring right at him, not unkindly, was - was just waiting. With a practiced smile and a mild look of questioning on his face. Waiting for this random man in his cafe to order, and get out of line, and probably not have the panic attack of a lifetime in the middle of his floor. Probably not that.
“Ah. Um. Just a coffee. Black.”

“Hey, Jon?” Martin isn’t moving. He sturdies himself, holding Jon back like an anchor. If Jon wanted to go, all he’d have to do is drop Martin’s hand, but he can’t. They’re holding hands. They’re meant to be holding hands. “Why did you say my mother was dead?”
“I don’t know,” Jon runs his free hand through his messy curls. When had his hair gotten so long? “It just popped into my head like a passing thought, like something I heard somewhere once. We haven’t known each other that long, Martin, I’m sure I just mixed you up with someone else at the Institute.”
“Like a memory?” Martin asks, quietly.
“Sure,” Jon says. “Like a memory.”
***
Between phantom earthquakes and visions of a terrifying future, something is very, very wrong at the Institute. And only Jon and Martin can see it.

Summary
He downed the rest of his glass in one quick motion, trying not to cough on it, and...half-succeeded. Just about.
Jon just chuckled as he gasped and choked a little on the motion, the laugh soft and slow from a few feet away, and something in him thawed out a little more at the sound, the sight. His throat felt warm. All down through his chest, it spread, with a light burning playing through the caverns of his body as the wine warmed him from the inside out. As the relief dripped in, solid and easy and fucking painful. But sweet, still. Sweet.
The light from the kitchen was playing off the curve of Jon's nose, catching in the breaks between strands of his hair, and it was worth every half-assed sensory-dulling deal and whatever bottle of putrid alcohol he had to force down to see it. To stay, and see it, and be present enough to feel how important it all was to him, again.
(If he could just let it be.)
It was worth it.
He swallowed, and smiled around the lump in his throat. The aftertaste.
"Next time, we'll get straight vodka, don't worry."OR
Jon and Martin get a little too drunk and confess their feelings. Talk. It’s as much of a disaster and a blessing as could be expected.

Jonathan Sims works as one of The Magnus University's librarians. It's a quiet job, one he loves, aside from having to deal with students who can't return their books on time. That is until one of the janitors brings in an old book, one that is supposed to be locked away, kept away from the public, one that is from a collection he's been dying to keep his hands on
Martin Blackwood is a janitor working for The Magnus University, doing his best to get back, keeping his head down and staying unnoticed by most of the students and staff. His life is a dull rotation of work, sleep, and more work, until he finally gets to talk to the handsome librarian. He sat on the edge of his bed, wings curled loosely behind him. They moved when he breathed - subtle, unconscious shifts, like how a hand might twitch when asleep. He could feel them in a way that was beyond just pain.
They weren’t just attached.
They were his.
That's the worst part.

“I haven't been here very long either, actually," Martin admitted. "I inherited the farm from my grandad when he died a few years back, but I only moved here at the beginning of the spring. I had a job, and my mum… well, it was a bit far to move, you know? You should have seen the place when I came up– it was a bit of a wreck, honestly, a real sad sight– but I'd like to think I've got it cleaned up at least a bit now. But there were some outbuildings already on the property when I moved in. You know, a chicken coop, a well, that kind of thing. I thought I might as well try to rent out the old farmhand cabins, see if anyone would be interested in moving in. Not like I'd be using all that space by myself, you know?"
Jon nodded. Did Martin always talk this much? "Well, I do appreciate it. I'll try not to be too much of a bother."AKA, Martin inherited Blackwood Farm and decided to rent out the farmhand cabins. Jon, who has just graduated from University in Zuzu City and gotten a job at the Stardew Valley Museum and Library, moves in. Things go fairly smoothly for a few weeks until Gunther vanishes, along with the entire museum collection.

He was sure there had to be more to it - some catch, some sinister web being built under the fabric of their skin to keep them both intact. Some grand plan, already laid and waited on, that they were just another part of. Pawns in another great game they’d never understand.
Or maybe…well? Maybe...it actually was just the end.
Maybe the Web had gotten what she’d wanted, and they were as free as they ever would be. As they ever had been.
As Jon looked up at him, a small, dopey smile layered onto his face on top of the mask of pure exhaustion, relief, he found he didn’t particularly care.

Jon and Martin wake up Somewhere Else, with matching chest scars. At the safehouse, on the day that the apocalypse *would* have started, with...basically nothing standing in their way to a better future. (Of course, save for the memories of the last apocalypse and a half, the slight ache in both of their chests, and the absolutely unfathomable task of trying to live after getting so used to dying. There's only so long the comfort can last before it crumbles.)

Martin makes Jon tea for the first time about a week into his transfer. It’s horrible. Gag-reflex inducing. Somehow sporting all the wrong flavors.
For some reason, he does not have the heart to break this to Martin.
Little does Jon know that Martin actually makes wonderful tea. Just not for him.

“Are you a godly man, Doctor Sims?”
“I don’t think I can answer that question in a way that matters.”
“Rest assured I don’t expect that.”
Quiet.
“I believe…” he starts, then stops to breathe in, deeply. Just to stall, just to think, just to avoid Father Lucas’s attentive gaze, he takes a drag off his cigarette “I believe in people. On the best of people. On their worst, too. But it’s very difficult to be surrounded by dying men in a tent that smells of stale blood and gunpowder and believe there’s someone up there looking out for us.”
And he can see them now. Clutching their rosaries, calling out to their mothers, to their gods, to their long lost lovers. He can see them while the nurses held hands that would inevitably grow still and he could see himself, the only one with the responsibility to change their fate, useless in the centre of it.

Sasha steepled her fingers. “They’re totally not actually dating, right?”
“Oh, no way. The day Jonathan ‘represses all feelings’ Sims legitimately tells someone he loves them, I’ll eat raw sushi.”
“It’s really good,” Sasha said, rehashing an old argument.
“I don’t care.”
Jon and Martin are happily dating. Tim and Sasha are positive that they’re lying.

“Martin… You’re not, uh…” Jon rubs a self-conscious hand over the back of his neck, naturally unsure about the proper way to broach the subject of one’s possible death. “You didn’t die here, did you?”
Martin swallows. “I… did, actually?” He says, his brows shooting up with an apologetic smile. He sounds as though he thinks he’s done something wrong somehow by dying.
Jon can see dead people. Martin is haunting his new flat.
Well. They're gonna have to make it work, somehow. -

Summary
Jonathan Sims, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, London, has always tried to keep both feet on the ground. It’s a pity, then, that the universe has other plans, and upon making a rather ill-advised decision to read one troublesome book, Jon finds his life quite literally turned upside down. Now six feet overground and one strong breeze away from deep space exploration, he’ll have to reckon with the forces that rule his life—and, ultimately, decide whether they rule him at all.
But while Jon pontificates from on high, the inestimable Sasha James, Archival Assistant and unintended sleuth, is trying to discover what all this is about. Surrounded by suspicious strangers, mind-mangling manuscripts, and unexplained plumbing problems, she has plenty of places to start. She’ll find out who did this, even if it means uncovering a few cults along the way. Even if she feels a strange, growing kinship with the dark. Even if her friendship with Tim is deteriorating more by the day.
Fighting the forces of darkness has never been so lonely.
In which Jon learns to let go, Sasha tries to hold tight, and hindsight is twenty-twenty—assuming you still have eyes.
Updates approximately weekly.
