Places where she would be adorned with jewels and circlets instead of suspicion, where her brilliance would be celebrated rather than endured. A land where a ruling queen would see a daughter in her, where a king would recognise another scholar and finally the son who brings her home, smiling and certain, would be praised for finding the settlement everyone feared he never would in all his years of dancing and flirting and—
Fiyero catches himself staring and forcibly drags his thoughts back into his skull.
He knows exactly where the gloves came from.

Summary
The desert outside of Oz feels like it could go on forever.
But of course, Elphaba would say later, that didn’t make any sense. Eventually, though seemingly longer than any account either of them had ever heard would state, they begin encountering settlements with people from the land known as Ev.
Ev isn’t Oz, and that’s really for the better, but it means that Elphaba and Fiyero have to adjust to so many things being different, and not just the obvious.

She scrambled down the slope, slipping, half-falling, catching herself with hands that stung from the cold. Her knees hit the snow hard as she reached him.
“Fiyero—!”

Fiyero didn’t really know when he fell — from the ridge or for her — only that both hurt like hell, and that Elphaba’s hands, shaking and warm with magic and fury, were the only thing that ever caught him.
