Leon dances on the brink of consciousness, thoughts and sensations fading in and out as voices whisper somewhere to his left. He catches words here and there, hypoxia… refeeding syndrome…aspiration pneumonia…flight risk, things he might have understood at one point but now hold little meaning.
He blinks and the fluorescents above him sway. In his peripheral vision, he can see two blurry outlines, close enough that his hair stands on end. They're facing away, unaware of his wakefulness.
He lays frozen and tries to keep his heart steady, reciting each inhale and exhale like a prayer, observing them through it all. The beeping of a monitor quickens despite his attempts, and they turn to him, eyes wide and mouths open as they call his name.
