He watched the two acrobats go through familiar motions. They stretched, pushing their flexibility further and further each time. Dick ached to join them, to step out into the wide space and remember what had once been. It had been so long since he’d really practiced his acrobatics. Longer still since he’d performed. He tried not to think of the Batcave, of Bruce, but there had been a space made just for him, with rings and bars and a trapeze, things that couldn’t be justified as training for real combat. And a net. Always a net, no matter how Dick often had said he didn’t need it.
There was nothing like that with Slade. That was fine. He just missed it.
Dick knows Slade won't be happy with him, but he has gotten good at taking Slade's punishments. Good enough that stopping to look at the circus–just to look, nothing more–seemed worth the pain to come.
He doesn't expect Slade to put him in a small, unchanging room and leave him.
Not again.
Not after how long it had been since Dick had last made him do that.

“Robin–no!” Batman shouted, and Dick jerked. He couldn’t stop it. Batman was looking at him, not Robin, who lay a few feet away, stirring. He knew. He knew, and the horror was written all over his mask.
Dick turned back to the rifle, finger on the trigger, and tuned them out. One deep breath, in and out, and then he inhaled. He breathed out, only a half-breath, just like Slade had taught him. And then he fired.
“Robin,” Dick said quietly, “is dead.”
Dick has always heard that caged birds don't sing, but he wasn't caged. Slade didn't even keep a leash on him. He was Slade's apprentice, as surely as he had ever been anything else, and it was Slade who gave his life meaning and direction. Nothing would change that. Bruce–Batman had failed before, and he would fail again. Robin, though. Dick hadn't seen that coming.

His hair was greasy, smeared flat by the rain on his forehead, and Dick pushed it back, raking it out of his face and wincing at the feel of it. He’d wash it later. If Slade let him. If Slade gave him a later.
There was no doorbell. Dick took a shuddering breath and raised his hand to knock on the door. Then Dick saw–him.
Hair grown out to past his shoulders, loose, which meant the year had been good to him if he wasn’t surrounded in practicalities. Arms thick and muscular in his wife-beater, an ironic twist when Dick had been the one he’d beat, never Adeline. A face worn but sharp nonetheless, tilted to look down at him. One piercing blue eye.
Dick swallowed, resisting the stupid urge to avert his gaze. He’d come all this way–he could look the man who stalked his every thought in the eye.
“Little bird,” Slade rumbled. “Come inside.”
It had been years since Dick saw Slade. Years since he was trapped in his twisted world. Years since he had born the dreaded black and orange. And in those years, Dick had learned nothing, because he was here at Slade's doorstep, hoping against all hope that Slade could give him what he needed when even Dick didn't know what that was.

He stepped forward, moving past Jaskier, and a hand shot out to stop him. “I can’t let you die,” Jaskier snapped, with the same desperate determination as every word he spoke.
Geralt could push past him and climb up the stairs to where Yennefer waited, hair askew and prepared to risk it all for this fucking djinn. It would be easy, thoughtless–Jaskier didn’t have the strength to stop him. Yet Geralt didn’t move. He stood there, Jaskier’s hand pressed over the slow beat of his heart.
Yennefer is a beautiful sorceress, trouble and deeply in trouble, and Geralt has already decided to save her from the trouble of her own making when Jasker–loyal, foolish, troublesome Jaskier–stands between him and the witch and asks him to walk away.
Geralt, somehow, does.
It changes everything–and it doesn't change enough. Geralt makes a wish.

It felt almost prophetic for Tim to be under the knife of the Robin he had looked up to for so long. That was his comfort, beyond all else.
It would be Jason.
He laid his head back on the cool tile, a balm for the throbbing ache of his whole body after the beating Jason had given him, and breathed out. “Okay,” he said, to no one in particular, echoing his own thoughts. “Okay.”
Being trapped in an airless tank had given Tim more options than lying in the bottom of Hood's bathtub, watching him pull out a knife. He'd gotten out of the tank. Hood wasn't going to let him get out of this.
