Summary
“Buck,” Eddie repeats, like the word sounds foreign to him.
“What’s your full name?”
He squints. “Eddie…Diaz.”
“No, your full name. Your legal name. Do you know it?” He’s starting to panic. The dispatcher’s voice speaks in the background, but Buck can’t focus on what she’s saying.
“Eddie?” he repeats. “Diaz,” he adds.
“Edmundo,” Buck whispers. His steady demeanor cracks. He closes his eyes, tears streaming down his face. “Edmundo Ramón Diaz,” he says, voice trembling.
In the middle of the Arizona desert, Eddie gets sick.

Eddie jerks his head up. “What.”
Buck’s grin is wicked. “I didn’t correct her.”

“You’re telling me that we live together, sleep usually in the same bed, kiss and cuddle on a daily basis, share clothes, shower together, you even raise my kid, but. We’re just best friends?” Eddie sputtered, in disbelief.
“I mean. Yeah.” Buck exhaled, “It’s not like that. Not between us.”

Summary
“What do you want from me, Eddie? What do you want?”
“I want to know why you’re leaving.”
Buck’s eyebrows twitch, mouth tugging downward. “I can’t sleep in your bed anymore.” Fiddling with his napkin, he adds, quietly, “What am I supposed to do when you get a girlfriend? Sleep on your couch for the rest of my life?”
Eddie does not understand. What does any of that have to do with Buck?
“I’m not seeing anyone, Buck.”
“Yeah,” Buck says, voice fraught. “You’re not.”
Eddie gets the feeling he’s missing something. He stares at Buck, searching his features, looking for what it is. What will make Buck stop looking at him like this, like Eddie’s being mean on purpose? Like he’s saying all the wrong things?
Or: Eddie has changed. Buck likes him like this, too.
