However, they were just doing their job by coming round and doing a wellness check, and he was the real twat for inviting them in and hunching over in his seat half dressed.

One in the morning was perhaps the nicest time to go sit in the water: short swell coming in with the high tide, no manager barking in his ear about training, or finances, or whatever else he regularly tuned out, no one else in the inlet to bump boards with, and, quite frankly the most compelling reason, something to do to keep his insomniac brain from tripping over itself after not having been able to sleep. It was dead silent, save the lap of the waves against the shore, and there were few signs of life, other than a kōtare asleep in a mānuka tree some meters off from his spot in the bay, and it was honestly very serene, a peace of mind he had been needing for God knew how long.
