“What if we weren’t?” Lan Zhan says.
“Sorry, weren’t what?” Wei Ying replies, not understanding what Lan Zhan is getting at. “Everything?”
Lan Zhan thinks for a moment. “Mn.”
Wei Ying’s mind starts whirring, trying to figure out what Lan Zhan is implying. “So you mean if we didn’t know each other?” he asks, thinking out loud. “Just Jade and Laozu, two strangers on their way to an action together.” It could work, now that he’s thinking about it. He had expected to meet a comrade but not a familiar face when he signed up for the carpool, had known enough about the group and trusted the Wens enough that anyone they trusted to be in the action was good enough for him.
“Strangers,” Lan Zhan agrees.
Or: a love story forwards and backwards, in a world where demonic cultivation is the norm.

“So, gay panic, huh?” The girl said from behind the bathroom stall after a minute or so. Lan Zhan was caught off guard. The last thing on her mind at the moment was gay panic.
“I’m straight.” She responded, a little too sharply. She took her hands out from under the running tap.
“Ah! Shit, sorry, I shouldn’t assume–” the girl’s voice broke off for a second. “I meant my gay panic. I thought you had left and was just, you know, having a little lesbian crisis about how hot everyone is outside. My name’s Wei Ying, by the way.”
Or: the one where Lan Zhan and Wei Ying meet in the bathroom of a gay club in London, and Lan Zhan learns the meaning of intimacy.

Wei Ying thinks he’s going to meet a younger version of Professor Lan, since they’re brothers- gently smiling, a little sad way back somewhere, smart as a whip and just a touch gullible, but instead he meets a drop dead gorgeous sonovabitch who refuses to make more than cursory eye contact and has about as much empathy in him as a brick fucking wall.
In which Wei Ying is forced to take AAS100: Intro to Asian American Studies to graduate. He has a cruelly strict grader, and his only hope of passing the class is attending extra credit movie nights in a ridiculous dorm with 3,000 rules.
Or: I watched a Chinese piece of media, promptly had a whole pile of feelings about being Chinese-American, and dumped them into a fanfiction.

“Why not?” Jin Zixuan says. “Don’t you think it’s a good idea? Yanli’s always saying how much she misses the lake near her parents’ house—it would be a little piece of home!”
Lan Zhan thinks of Wei Ying. He wonders if Wei Ying misses the lake too. Whether he might like a pond.

Summary
He can hear the shouts below from the counselors as they set up, mingled with the joyful cries of the campers who are here early. Easy laughter that seems to tie together the symphony of birds chirping, insects buzzing, and leaves rustling. It’s a melody that Wei Wuxian has long wished he knew how to recreate on his flute, to take with him this parcel of camp, even before things had changed that summer he was seventeen. But despite everything, he already feels safe here, like he’s at home. It’s strange. He hasn’t felt this settled in his bones in a long time.
