Elphaba shifts nervously against the pillow. She opens her mouth to say something, to deflect, but then Fiyero is pushing himself up and settling down at her side, eye-level. His hand comes up and holds her cheek. When he does things like that, he can see that feral, defensive part of her brain weaken. “What’s worrying you, Fae?” he mumbles, and there’s so much love in the way she stares back at him that he can almost feel her walls shake.
She takes a deep breath. “I’m scared that… that you won’t like it. And then where would that leave us?”

Elphaba had handled silk before, in her brief tenure as a Quadling country shophand, but was unprepared for all the ways a body betrays its eagerness—the sighs, the rustling, the unexpected erotics in the rise and fall of the chest. How silk, like most fabrics, assumes the body heat of the wearer, so that it seemed to be a glimmering second skin. This is what water must feel like, she thought, and this is why everyone likes it so. She wanted to dive into Glinda and be herself cleansed, though of what she did not know. Her verderous original sin, maybe.

Elphaba stiffens, her shoulders tense, her gaze cutting into him, as she wants to argue, but the silence betrays her. He’s right, and they both know it.------------------------
