Helen accidentally walks in on Madeline having sex, seeing way more than she intended. She also stays longer than intended, unable to tear her eyes away from the sight and things get weird between them the morning after the incident. It has to just be the weirdness of seeing your friend fucking someone right? Not the exhilaration of watching and being watched. This will all blow over and they can go back to being regular friends. Right?

She knows all of the things that make up a good story — when to use contractions to make the story flow more naturally, where to place a good em dash, the right combination of fluffy, pretty sounding words and clinical things that drag the reader down a rabbit hole they don’t want to put down — and somehow she just can’t apply it to her own writing.
But editing brings in a steady paycheck, Helen reminds herself, and it’s a safe, stable career.
No one tears her work — her novel, her baby, her life’s work compiled into two hundred and forty letter sized pages, twenty six chapters, 1.5 spaced and thirteen point font with serifs because it’s easier to read — to shreds and rips it apart like it took an hour and not the better part of a decade and a half.
