Stephanie Lauter invites Richie Lipshitz and his friends over to a party she is throwing, thinking it would be a harmless way to bother Max Jagerman for the torment he had put Richie and his friends through. During a game of seven minutes in heaven Max and Richie are left in a closet together were Max claims to kiss Richie because he is, "just trying to play the game". Richie is shocked by this interaction and decides to tell the group nothing happened, with Max backing him up. After that night Max is left confused and conflicted about what he thought was hatred for Richie, and that night refusing to leave Richie's head. While struggling to figure out these emotions Max can't confide in anyone as his parents would berate and possibly abandon him and Richie's biological parents trying to make their way back into his life for his last year of High School.
