Each has their own struggles, their distractions, but Sylvia Mercar should be able to swallow hers. The Caretaker suggests a walk and sends her through the eluvian to somewhere familiar, yet foreign. She doesn't belong here. She never wants to leave.
A gift for Hekaerge-Athenias, high recommend reading her fic Quantum Satis (As Much As Needed) first as this fic spoils some major plot elements. M for the stuff in the tags seriously.

It should be a quick, clean job. Get in, get what he needs, get out, move on. But then, Lucanis should be in Treviso, not riding a crowded Minrathous rail line towards the inner city. On several fronts, things are off plan.
Lucanis works alone (except when he doesn't). Rook isn't supposed to be working at all (except she kinda is). Teaming up would be ridiculous. Crazy. It's not going to happen.

“So, kid–-” an older dwarf with long grayish-dirty blond hair sat down with a huff and kicked his feet up onto the table “--I hear you like stories. I’ve got one for you, if you don’t mind.” There was a long pause as he took in the atmosphere and drank some ale. “How about I spin you a tale of an unfortunate young man I call “Rook” and his journey to save the world? Sounds simple enough, right?” He chuckled to himself as he swirled the golden, bubbly liquid in his tankard. “That’s what I thought too. Turns out, this hero shit’s way over my head.” He took another sip of ale. “Look, I know what you’re thinking: ‘Haven’t we heard this story a thousand times?’ And the answer is: Maybe. But, that’s the best part about stories. You can spin the same one a thousand times and never come to the same conclusion. Sometimes, those conclusions aren’t always happy.”
Canon events from Veilguard are followed fairly closely early on, alongside partial canon rewrites in different areas. I'm not satisfied with how some of the story is written, so I decided to take it upon myself to flesh out my Rook more with some canon-divergence thrown in--more overall as the story progresses. This is also a multi-AU fic of sorts. Enjoy!
